Cork / County Cork Fryer Families
« on: Monday 06 June 22 20:05 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I am interested in learning as much as possible about Thomas Fryer and Ann Dunn, who were married, in 1779, in the Diocese of Cork and Ross, County Cork, Ireland, especially their ancestral lines.

They were the great great grandparents of John Denis Fryer, after whom the Fryer Library of the University of Queensland, Australia was named.

Apparently, two of their children were Jonas Dunn Fryer and Henry Hardy Fryer (born in 1789, and not their later great grandson, Henry Hardy Fryer, 1864-1935) whose names could be clues to their ancestors' names.

Some of their children were associated with St. Multose Church, Kinsale, County Cork, Ireland.

Thomas and Ann could also have been the parents of Josias Fryer, who married Catherine McDonnell, in 1807, in Ross, County Cork, Ireland.

Josias and Catherine are the Current Best Candidates for the parents of Thomas Fryer, who married Ellen Murphy, my great great grandmother, on September 20, 1834, in Kinsale, County Cork, Ireland.

As stated in his entry papers (1838) for becoming an excise man, my great great grandfather, Thomas Fryer, was also associated with St. Multose Church, Kinsale, County Cork, Ireland.

There is currently very little information about these individuals available online.

Thank you, very much, for any information that you are able to provide.

Regards, R. Paul R. Fryer.

Steve,

Thank you, very much, for the information about Thomas Fryer, born in Kinsale, County Cork, Ireland, son of Josiah/Joseph Fryer and Catherine McDonnell.

Is the given name ambiguity due to an abbreviation?

Until about 15:00 on Tuesday, January 05, 2016, when I first read your recent post, I had no Current Best Candidates for my great great great grandparents.

The information does not seem to be available online, possibly due to the records lost, in the Four Courts fire, in Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland, on June 30, 1922.

Getting more, supporting, information will continue to be difficult.

My great great grandparents, Thomas Fryer and Ellen Murphy, were both born somewhere in Ireland, and were married, on September 20, 1834, in Kinsale, County Cork, Ireland, possibly in St. Multose parish, which is given as his parish in the text of his 1838 Excise entry papers.

My great grandparents were Henry Joseph Fryer and Jane Griffiths.

Henry was christened, on March 19, 1843, in Wellington, Shropshire, England.

There is also a record of Thomas Fryer marrying Ellen #. about 1833, in Wellington, Shropshire, England.

Henry’s siblings included John, Robert, Thomas, Catherine, Mary A., and James.

Thomas, the father, may have had a brother, John Fryer, who was born, in 1812 or 1813, in Kinsale, County Cork, Ireland.

His wife, Mary A. #, was born, in 1824 or 1825, in Shoreditch, Middlesex, England.

Their son, Robert, was born, in 1845 or 1846, in #, County Cork, Ireland.

They moved to Hoxton New Town, St. Leonard, Shoreditch, London, Middlesex, England.

May the universe notice you!

Regards, R(ichard). Paul R(edmayne). Fryer, infovore

I have recently been told that my late father, Richard T. Fryer, had had a first wife.

He married Irene Aston, during the September Quarter of 1939, in the Birmingham Registration District.

I would like to learn more about the immediate family and ancestors of Irene Aston.

Thank you, very much, in advance, for any information that you are able to provide.

Regards, R. Paul R. Fryer.

All,

Just prior to 08:00 A. M., on Wednesday, August 04, 2010, I rediscovered your posts about the Griffiths family of Bilston, Staffordshire.

My paternal great grandmother, Jane Griffiths, was born, during the December Quarter, 1847, in Bilston, Staffordshire.

My paternal great grandfather, Henry Joseph (?) Fryer, was born, during the June (?) Quarter, 1843, in Wellington, Shropshire.

They were married, during the December Quarter, 1869, at St. Bartholomew Church, Wednesbury, Staffordshire,

Are you able to give me “chapter and verse” about the immediate family and ancestors of Jane Griffiths?

Thank you, very much, in advance, for any information that you are able to provide.

Regards, R. Paul R. Fryer.

Fran,

Just after 08:00 A. M., on Saturday, July 31, 2010, I noticed your mention of the June Quarter, 1876 marriage of Varley Whitehead to Martha Jane Bridge.

On November 07, 1873, Alice Bridge, cotton rover, who was born, in Ash Street, Whitworth, Lancashire, in 1849, married Abel Lomax, labourer and quarryman, in Oldham, Greater Manchester, Lancashire.

Her father, unknown Bridge, was a miner.

Their son, James Samuel Lomax, motor driver of 118 The Birches, #, #, married, on March 26, 1907, at the Baillie Street Chapel, Rochdale, Lancashire, Ethel Whitehead, of 1 Dex Street, Smallbridge, near Rochdale, Lancashire, who was born, in Smallbridge, near Rochdale, Lancashire, on September 30, 1885.

Ethel's father, unknown Whitehead, was also a miner.

The daughter of James Samuel Lomax and Ethel Whitehead, Betty Whitehead Lomax, was born, in Smallbridge, near Rochdale, Lancashire, on September 03, 1919.

She married my uncle, Thomas George Leslie Redmayne.

Regards, R. Paul R. Fryer.

Viktoria,

Thank you, very much, for the location and occupation information that you are able to provide.

It seems that Crown Lane, Angel Meadow, Manchester is a reasonable choice for where Thomas Redmayne, hawker, was living on April 03, 1881.

Among the online references to this Crown Lane, the comments at http://books.google.ca/books?id=_RBcAAAAQAAJ&pg=PA313&lpg=PA313&dq=%22crown+lane%22+%22angel+meadow%22&source=bl&ots=xqELRwjEXx&sig=EvR0tfUD7zmHr268EwZP8W0UCVk&hl=en&ei=bNwkTPuVK4PbnAe0sdHPBA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=7&ved=0CB4Q6AEwBg#v=onepage&q=%22crown%20lane%22%20%22angel%20meadow%22&f=false stand out.

According to http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/manchester/hi/people_and_places/history/newsid_8233000/8233388.stm, Friedrich Engels called Angel Meadow “Hell upon Earth”.

Yesterday, Monday, June 21, 2010, further research, at FreeBMD, seems to indicate that Thomas Redmayne, hawker, was the Thomas Redmayne who died, in the Rochdale Registration District, during the June Quarter of 1896.

His given name, surname, and life span make him a viable candidate for being my maternal great great grandfather.

Unfortunately, even though Redmayne ancestors were, apparently, involved in the Norman invasion of Ireland, near Waterford, in August, 1170, and the surname Redmayne is rare in Ireland, I cannot find, beyond the two references already mentioned, any other references to Thomas Redmayne, hawker.

However, Redmayne family lore holds that my great great grandfather was “raised, by monks, in Wexford”, as is detailed at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=icnbpfvm60t24qdk1qis4a5i57&topic=320217;prev_next=next.

My confirmed great grandfather, also Thomas Redmayne, was a labourer, cartman, and hay and corn merchant, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland.

Redmayne family lore holds that he came to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, “with the militia”, prior to his marriage, which occurred in the December Quarter of 1881.

As he was born, in Camden Town, Middlesex, in about 1859, we believe that we are related to the better-known Redmaynes of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland and Gateshead-on-Tyne, County Durham.

According to Griffith's Valuation 1855 of County Clare, Robert Robey Redmayne was a landowner in County Clare.

His brother, John Marriner Redmayne, Mayor of Gateshead-on-Tyne, County Durham, in 1870, was married, on February 14, 1857, at Kilrush, County Clare.

Redmayne family lore also holds that my first cousin, once removed, Lee Redmayne, is “ninety-something (!) in line for the title of Lord Redmayne”

Interestingly, but probably coincidentally, his grandfather, my uncle, Thomas George Leslie Redmayne, married Betty Whitehead Lomax, who was born, on September 03, 1919, in Smallbridge, near Rochdale, Lancashire.

Although Thomas Redmayne, hawker, by occupation, could have been the father of Thomas Redmayne, hay and corn merchant, Thomas Redmayne, hay and corn merchant, when he was married, indicated that his father, (Unknown) Redmayne, was a barrister, not a hawker.

Researching 3 Crown Lane, Kerry, only yields references to 3 Crown Street, Atherton, Manchester.

As explained above, Migky, I know very little about Thomas Redmayne, hawker.

Thomas Redmayne, hawker, Emms, does not appear in any earlier census returns.

I agree with you about the slow progress of Irish genealogy.

I have similar problems with researching my paternal great great grandparents, as is detailed at

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=kcp9q3i4g25mk1hkqgn2b75iq0&topic=307561.0

Thank you, very much, in advance, for any further information that you are able to provide.

Regards, R. Paul R.
