Wicklow / Place Names County Wicklow

Hello Rootchatters,  ;D :D,

I am having trouble  ???  identifying some place names in County Wicklow in a letter written in 1825 in NSW, Australia, and wondering if anyone could help me. I have attached a small portion of the letter (a memorial by a convict transported in 1821 from Ireland to the Governor of the colony, requesting the Governor of the Colony grant free passage of his wife and 5 children living in Co. Wicklow, to the Colony of NSW. In the second line from the bottom of the attachment is the name of where his family was living (?) and states near what looks to be Rathdrum.

I would be extremely grateful to anyone who can confirm this is "Rathdrum" or some other name and the name of the locality before the words "near Rath.....".

Many thanks in anticipation,

Pilgrims Progress  :D ;D

Kildare / Re: County Kildare- Unclear Place Name On 1841 Record

Hi Heywood,

Thank you so much for your prompt reply, the information you have supplied has been especially helpful.  ;D :D

Yes, the marriage of Daniel Higgins and Catherine Nowlan in 1832 at Castledermot is the correct one and you are probably right re Coltstown being her native place, as it doesn’t seem to very far from Castledermot.  Thank you for the information re the name Bernard aka  Brian. The 1841 immigration records do state Catherine’s parents as being Bernard Nowlan and Mary Cavanagh. Thank you for the additional information re the Tithe Applotments of a Brian Nowlan of Coltstown.

Many thanks Heywood, you have made my day,

Hello Roots Chat Members,  :D

Would be very grateful for any assistance, ;D  :D

South Africa / Re: O'Shea Brothers - Was This Photo Taken In South Africa?

Hi hepburn :D and Ruskie ;D,

Thank you both for your information. I agree the man far right in group of 4 "Ricksha Boys" could be the one in the photo of the Thomas and Jeremiah O'Shea or possibly a relative  ;D.

Found this additional site which was helpful. https://historymatters.co.za/content/amahashi-african-rickshaw-pullers-early-twentieth-century-durban-25-march-2014

Very much appreciate your input and anyone else's.

Kind Regards,

Hi Rosinish, ;D tonepad,  ;D and Ruskie,  ;D

Thank you for your quick response and interesting observations. The family arrived per Norval in Sydney, NSW, Australia 1880. In that period most boats took the newer and faster Suez Canal route. This photo is obviously much later than that. I estimate 1895-1905.

There doesn’t appear to be any evidence that either men were there serving in Boer Wars 1899-1902.

It never occurred to me that they may have been part of a wedding party as the buttonholes suggest. Perhaps one of the brothers unaccounted for may have married in Sth Africa.  Family legend says their mother Ellen Mary didn’t settle well in her new home and returned alone to Ireland.  I am unable to find her death in Australia which supports this.  ???

In any case thank you for attempting to help. It is much appreciated and I hope that anyone else seeing this topic might know more than we do. Do any of you know any other site that I could inquire re the origin of the photo?

Kind Regards,

Pilgrims Progress  :)

South Africa / O'Shea Brothers - Was This Photo Taken In South Africa?
« on: Friday 23 August 19 06:01 BST (UK)  »
 ;D Hello RootsChatters,

The photo attached is my husband's G G'F Thomas Joseph O'Shea (left) 1869-1954 and his brother Jeremiah 1864-1926, both born County Kerry, Ireland who emigrated with their family to NSW, Australia per ship "Norval" in 1880.

No one in the family knows where this photo was taken. Wondering if someone with more knowledge of Sth African photos from this era- 1895-1900 can verify its origin. Would be extremely grateful for any assistance,

Sincerely Pilgrims Progress  :D
