Lanarkshire / SCHOOL DINNERS FOR ORPHANS
« on: Tuesday 02 June 20 03:48 BST (UK)  »
My GF and his two brothers were aged 2, 4 & 6 yrs when their father died and aged 6, 8 & 10 when their mother died. They were brought up by Grandparents.

I have a copy of the Poor Relief claim from when their father died right up until each of the boys were booted and suited for starting work.

My GF once said 'he would never forgive Granny for sending them to school on a Saturday'. He found it embarrassing due to the stigma attached to orphans. He attended John Street school, Bridgeton probably around 1905, he was born 1893.

Would orphans have attended lessons on a Saturday or would they only have gone along for their dinner?

Thanks Lodger. I didn't think it was 'Rest', that's why I put a? at it.
I'll need copy your very informative information, most interesting.
I visited New Monkland and found the stone which once had my ancestors names inscribed on it, such a pity names were all worn, could've been lots of info there.

Treehouse Genealogy has recently produced a cd of New Monkland cemetery. https://www.treehousegenealogy.co.uk/

I have ancestors who were buried in Chapel (of Rest?) cemetery in Airdrie, now a car park!
The bodies from this cemetery (along with headstones) were exhumed, I think 1938, and moved to New Monkland cemetery. Most of the stones were quite worn, so not a lot of information on a lot of the bodies exhumed.

Hi Linda

Wow, that's great. I am descended from Janet b. 1721, she married William Steven in Dunsyre in 1745. There was another daughter Jennet b 1719, but guess she died when the next daughter was named Janet.
Who are you descended from?

Heather

Have you checked to see if there is a Poor Relief record?  Being a single mother, she would have at least missed some work and had no pay, so if she had no family support, she have had to rely on relief.

I used to live near there, but unfortunately have no pics.  Have you tried googling Kirklands Hospital, there's a few write-ups, but no pics.  There is a contact for the university archives you could try them to see if they have any photos.
Good Luck
