Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Place of Birth
« on: Thursday 07 October 21 20:45 BST (UK)  »

Yes, I think this could be it! My family lived all along the Knoydart Peninsula (Barrisdale, Airor, Rhunival, Skiary, Inverie and Inverguseran) so this fits in pretty well. I actually was looking at Inbhir Dorrchail as a possibility and the spelling of Inverghorkill seems the most likely to tie into the area.

Thank you...I think this is the best explanation all round!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Place of Birth
« on: Wednesday 06 October 21 23:43 BST (UK)  »
Greetings!

I've been going back and looking over some miscellaneous records that I had saved a while back and came across one birth certificate in particular that has left me confused.

The birth certificate in question is from Knoydart in 1860, and try as I might I just can't quite figure out what the specific place of birth says. I'm pretty familiar with the area in question. It was and still is a remote, out of the way area and I'm familiar with many of various names of old settlements and shielings that are scattered along the coastline. However, I'm unaware of anywhere that matches what appears to be written here.

It looks like it says Inveryorkel, but a quick google search brings up zero results for that. I thought perhaps it could have been Inveroykel, but that is approx 150 miles away and nowhere near Knoydart. The only name that is even remotely close would be Inverguseran, which is on the Knoydart Peninsula, but I'm almost positive that is not what this says.

Appreciate anyone's thoughts or input on this!

Kat

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Re: dating and restoration pretty please

Thank you all for your time and effort, its most appreciated and the results are far better than anything I could come up with! Although I'll never be able to be absolutely certain about the identity of the young woman in the photograph, its perhaps fair to assume that it is who I suspected it might be, based on the date that the studio was there.

Many thanks for everyone's input!

Hello all,

Attached is a photograph of a mystery lady, the younger woman on the right, who may or may not be a relative of mine. I think that its possibly a great-great-great aunt of mine who married in London in 1886, although I could be mistaken as the only link really is that marriage was in London, as was the studio in which this photograph was taken. I'd also be interested to see what anyone can do restoration wise as I have neither the skill nor the time to do it any justice.

Many thanks in advance,

Ceitidh.

US Lookup Requests / Re: Mary MacMaster
« on: Saturday 06 February 10 21:48 GMT (UK)  »

Hmm. This does look to be the most promising so far, although its by no means conclusive. I also decided to trawl through the Social Security Death Index for any Mary's who were born Jan 12 1911, though I didn't get as far as you did. I found a couple of possibilities but this Mary Ratcliff appears to be the best so far, especially given the link to Los Angeles as this would explain why her parents moved there. I daresay I could just try to order the marriage certificate for this couple and go from there.

Many thanks for your effort and time, this seems to be the best lead yet!

US Lookup Requests / Re: Mary MacMaster

I believe I looked at that reference and thought it unlikely that it was my Mary because of the place of birth. However, it  may be worth investigating further as I've learnt not to trust as gospel the information that some records contain! I actually found a birth date for Mary from her mothers Naturalization Record which puts her birth date as January 12 1911 in New York. I'm not sure what to do, it would be different if the records were easily accessible for me but as I live in Scotland it means sending away for them and they may not even be what i'm looking for. However, nobody ever said this was easy!

dettori28; I believe that the death record in the Hanna MacMaster whose daughter I am searching for. Perhaps her death certificate will shed more light as to Mary's wherabouts.

US Lookup Requests / Mary MacMaster
« on: Friday 05 February 10 20:16 GMT (UK)  »

Hello all,

I am looking for more information on a Mary MacMaster [or McMaster, its interchangeable] who according to US census records was born in New York around 1911-1912. The census records do not specify where in New York she was born. Her parents were Angus MacMaster and Hanna Larson; Angus was from Scotland and Hanna was from Sweden - they were married on April 4th 1910 in Manhattan County, New York. Basically, the only information I have about Mary is from the 1920 and 1930 US census', I have failed to find her thereafter but it is entirely likely that she married and thus changed her name. I believe that Angus and Hanna both died in the 1950's in Los Angeles, I wonder if perhaps this was where Mary was living as it is a long way to move.

I have looked on Ancestry and come up with nothing, but I wonder if any kind soul can direct me to any other online resources or lend any advice/suggestions.

Many Thanks,

Ceitidh.

United States of America / Re: Montana death certificate.
« on: Friday 11 December 09 12:47 GMT (UK)  »

Lisa,

It seems that Archibald was something of a wanderer! I have records linking him to Canada, Australia, United States and continental Europe. This seems to be why its so hard to find any vital records such as a marriage [if one exists] or death certificates because he appears to have been all over the place!

As for the Archibald MacMaster on Rootsweb, that is actually the cousin of my Archibald. To confuse matters even further, his father was also called Archibald and he was the brother of my Archibald's father, Ronald!

Thank you for your assistance,

Ceitidh.

Hello Lisa,

The last definitive record that I have of Archibald in the UK is in the 1901 census where he is living with his parents Ronald and Mary, as well as four of his siblings in Knoydart, Invernesshire. I'm fairly sure from other records that Archibald travelled between the United States, Australia and Canada during the 1920's.

Hope this is enough information, I will gladly supply more if I can help!

Many, many thanks for your assistance,

Ceitidh.
