Technical Help / Re: Windows 10 update problem keyboard issue
« on: Monday 25 June 18 11:42 BST (UK)  »
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I was wondering if anybody else had come across a keyboard issue after the (presumably) latest windows 10 update.

I've moved your post here to the Technical Help board, it will feel right at home here. :)

Thank you all for your lovely messages, it was great to be back online again!

Hoping you all have a lovely Easter too, a time to reflect whilst munching an Easter Egg, and if we're lucky a Hot Cross Bun.

Thank you all - it's been a very tense afternoon, and it's a big relief that it's all working again.

The Common Room / RootsChat Downtime - our apologies
« on: Thursday 29 March 18 16:22 BST (UK)  »
Unfortunately RootsChat has experienced downtime for almost four hours.

We're sorry about that.

It was caused by multiple failures in the networks that join a number of datacentres, including some in the North of England, North East Wales and Scotland.

RootsChat is run on our own servers, and is located in one of the affected datacentres in Manchester.

We are not clear at this stage if there may be some other outages as things come fully back to normal or not.

I hope that you will be able to catch up with the research that you have missed. Outgoing email notifications may have been affected, so please do check for your latest replies by selecting the [ New Replies ] option at the top left of the page.

All the best - and have a lovely Easter.

Technical Help / Re: New browser for IGI/FamilySearch?
« on: Wednesday 28 March 18 08:30 BST (UK)  »
Topic locked as it's going off in a direction discussing ads as a result of browser choice, and even choice of mobile phones. Yikes.

RootsChat is free to use, but it's not free to run. We don't get any hand-outs to run the site, and are only funded by ads. So please, we would appreciate it to avoid discussing these, as we see a substantial loss of revenue each time this happens. This puts the future of the site in the balance, despite our best efforts.

We enjoy running the site for you, and hope you enjoy using it. :)

Thanks :)

Well if you add RootsChat to the 'Useful Websites' page then it would be a great start if you're mentioning the site here.

Hi Joyner

you may want to go back to your original post and crop the images you have posted before the copyright team remove them.

You will need to rename them as the system may not allow you to use the same name again.

Only small portions of certificates are allowed for deciphering purposes.

This crops up on here time and time again and yet there does not seem to be a satisfactory answer as to why the whole certificate cannot be shown. Now I am not saying you are right or wrong, what I am asking for is an explanation that can be defended given that full certificates are regularly posted on other sites. And whilst we are on the subject has anyone asked the GRO for a definitive ruling on this ?  Thank you.

This rule of only posting parts of certificates was as a result with discussion with the National Archives. The policy has not changed since this ruling.

The copyright policy of RootsChat is here:

It is worth noting at this point that we do not openly discuss legal matters that have the potential to affect this site, or its continuance. Please direct your replies to answering only the query of the topic itself, rather than discussing the point above and questioning the copyright policy in force on this site.

Many thanks for your understanding,

RootsChat co-founder.

Technical Help / Re: TribalPages Login problems
« on: Monday 05 February 18 10:45 GMT (UK)  »
Just a thought, do you think it could be an invalid password really, not an invalid email?

It's just a thought, as normally if somebody tried to log in somewhere then the error message is usually "invalid username or password" or "invalid email and password" or "invalid login details". Normally you would not be told if it was an invalid email address.

The other thing worth remembering is that normally when you log in somewhere is that any capitals or lower case letters are seen as totally different for a computer, so make sure they match too.
