Family History Beginners Board / Re: Name Amended on Pallot marriage records

I would venture that it was to make clear how it was pronounced. Just a thought.

maybe a family emergency.. or..maybe she or the babe were too ill.  I am unable to find my Aunt's
baptism still.  (Even tho some of my uncles were baptized in batches ) My reasoning was my
Granny's dear Mother had died a few months prior... Too many deaths.

Canada / Re: Marriage record Malcolm McGougan and Euphemia Brodie

How about  McGahan...or... McGuigan...McGoohan   ?  McGeoghan
Think of  accents to an ear unused to them ...some of the surname may be "slurred"
and some letters unpronounced when saying

re: the son :  would he be part of the Dr Barnardo Home Children scheme 1869 -1932 ?
The mother's had very little say in the matter ;  especially if they fell on hard times or father
deserted them or died. There were many organizations like Dr Barnardo supplying children
for farm labour/domestic duties. A child of 13 in 1892 was probably equivalent to a 20 year
old of today. On a passenger ships list about 1904 for Canada. I recall seeing children as young as 6 years old . There would be escorts accompanying the children. There is a data base to search.
Something to think apart as another alternative.

1.assumed surname to perhaps protect family from reprisals
                          2. break from the past

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Ancestry DNA Match
« on: Saturday 30 January 21 17:25 GMT (UK)  »
Our smaller DNA matches may be more important than we think. People had many children who often
had many children. Mothers died during childbirth etc. So these seemingly distant matches
could be from half siblings and their offspring during the years.

Lanarkshire / Re: Elizabeth Houston M'Lean Duff

Thank you sancti....my understanding is that the OPR Marriage records have basic information on them. That it is after the 1855 Scotland Registrations; with the wealth of information.
My own great great grandparents' 1847 Glasgow Marriage for example have their names and
that is pretty much it. No mention of their parents either.

As I have previously mentioned, on my great great grandfather Valentine Armstrong's Death
Registration 1859 September 1, Glasgow,  Elizabeth Houston identifies her self as his half sister and gives  (their mother) as Isabella Joyce. So rather than supposition, there are several other Scottish                            documents with John Houston/Isabella Joyce as her parents

Lanarkshire / Re: Elizabeth Houston M'Lean Duff mother of William Butler Duff

an ancestry tree I was looking at hoping for more lost family updates actually has atleast 2 major errors on it. Soon as I saw his  listed source: LDS data for a Marriage & Birth I thought  uh oh...Had scanty documentation that didnot support my particular interest .Was trying to notify tree owner but it never posted.

My sources are : Scotland Registration Certificates Birth/Marriage/Death for verification
various Glasgow Censuses for the occupations and  addresses that they have been at mainly Candleriggs Street and Mathieson Street.

My great great aunt was  Elizabeth Houston born in Ireland. She gives several ages. What never
changes is : her mother is Isabella Joyce & her father is John Houston occupation Spirit Merchant.
This particular tree has her being born 1827 in Londonderry Ireland of wrong parents:
Francis Houston & Jane Cary of Londonderry, Ireland.
The tree goes onto absorb my William Butler Duff  born 1858 ( son of Elizabeth Houston & William Duff) and gives him an incorrect marriage.

Correct = William Butler Duff married 1890 Janet Neilson ... His son George  born abt 1897. George Neilson Duff married Fanny McRoberts in 1926, Glasgow Scotland

Antrim / Re: McGuffie, Alexander & McLean, Christina Black McGregor

gaffy : Thanks for the "heads up". I am sure glad that I looked at the Family Trees last !

I reread my sources ie: Irish certifcates etc and who ever has the McGuffie/McLean  MacLean Trees up have somehow gotten their wires extremely crossed. If they looked at the Marriage Registrations/Birth Registrations they would see their errors. Peter M'Clean is John M'Clean's father for example.
Frustrating. I look at the addresses as well as the occupations to get a clearer idea of "who is who".
Now that Irishgenealogy.ie/civil  is online... please....please.. people check your sources.
Those hints on some of those sites...check them out first..people will recopy your mistakes.
p.s. I make no claim re: perfection  LOL
