New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: How to put same sex marriage in tree
« on: Friday 30 April 10 19:34 BST (UK)  »
I am still struggling to put my own Civil Partnership on my own tree!  :)

I use Family Tree Maker, and it's tricky. At least I have been able to make my OH a male, but it is recorded as a marriage, not as a Civil Partnership. So I have simple made a note in the narrative section, and wait for FTM to keep up to date with the times.  ::)

Many gay men see the ceremony as a marriage (I am one of those that don't), which may confuse researchers in the future. But what the hay -  so many of my ancestors said they were married when they were not!

I suppose I'm definitely one of the folk who get confused with civil partnerships vs marriage. I always assumed it was the same and have on many occasions said marriage rather than civil partnership....

As for ftm, and unusual or complicated relationships (My. G.G Granny in particular had 7 children by 5 different Men) I record it as 'spouse' but then define exactly the relationship in the notes column.

I suppose for a single sex partnership I would probably designate someone as male and someone as female but define the relationship in the notes section.

Same with someone who changes gender would you use their birth name/sex, or their real sex/name?

Yes I think ftm may have to alter slightly in the future...

Just to take this thread off on another tangent... I am 99.9% sure my one of my relatives who died in the 1970s when in her 90s, and her best friend were partners. Definitely no marriage, but if they were partners I would love to record it. My evidence? Nothing really, but they worked together, lived next door to each other, reportedly had tea together every night. I have a photo of the two of them and the way they are touching shows their closeness. Neither married, and they stayed close to each other all of their lives. Well if that isn't a partnership what is?!?

But the subject was so taboo then, am I doing them a dis-service by recording the relationship? Am I risking upsetting the more conservative members of my family by recording this relationship?

Has anyone else come across this?

I am looking for information on a Hellen or Ellen born in Mosside in1798 ( I believe). Ellen married Robert Hume and moved to Kirkcudbright at some point. I haven't found much on her family yet but would love to know more!

Bethsdragon... there were lots of Hyslops in this area, so I'm not sure if they are the same branch, But I'll have a hunt around and see if I have a reference to Hellen/Ellen.

Wow... how exciting ;D

Julie - There is a good chance that all the Hyslops you mention are related. It would be lovely to link everyone together.

My G.G.G Grandfather John Hyslop and his brother Robert Hyslop emigrated to New York. John returned back to Lochrutton and started a family late in life (his family generally didn't move far from Lochrutton, even to my generation! His brother Robert remained in NY but died of yellow fever. I don't believe that Robert had children.

There was another brother, William Hyslop. Now I believe some of his children may have emigrated, so its this side of the family that the papers have probably come from.

I'm on a day off today, and have a bit of running around to do, but I'll have an investigation into some of the folk you name and report back later.

Kirkcudbrightshire / Where is Chapmanleys? Complete

I'm trying to pinpoint Chapmanleys. I suspect it could be a row of cottages lying somewhere between Lochfoot and Troqueer. Maybe in Cargenbridge?

Hoping someone can pinpoint it for me.

Thanks

Elma,

Thanks very much for checking. Its highly likely that they couldnt afford a stone, so not to worry.

The new MI edition sounds great, especially if you have photographed the stones!

Without trying to sound cheesy, thank you very much for your (and your fellow BFHS members) efforts in photographing and transcribing as there will be generations of estranged folk like myself with Borders blood who will have a fabulous resource in the future!

Thank You!

Leicestershire / Re: St Margaret's Leicester

That's a offer I can't refuse Mike! However I think it may be a big ask because of the confusion over the surname. The details are as follows:

I'm looking for the birth of Sarah Ann Debrex (sometimes written as Deborex or Devereaux) abt 1825 in Leicester - I know her father was John Debrex. I also know there was a John Deborex (b1800) who married Dorothy Gadsby (1802) in 26 Dec 1820 at St Margarets and so I'm trying to confirm if they are the parents.

Any help appreciated

Sarah

Sarah,

Sorry to thread hyjack, but these are my realtions too :D
It is a very very confusing surname. I've lost count of the numbers of variations. I think it is actually supposed to be DEVEREUX.

I'm related through Harriet (b. abt 1831), daughter of John DEVEREUX and Dorothy Gadesby. Although i havent looked through this branch for a while, I have Dorothy's parents as Edward GADSBY and Dorothy TIMBRELL. But I havent been able to go back farther on John DEVEREUX due to the spelling issues.

PM me if you would like a link to my tree.

Kind Regards
Tracey
