The Common Room / Isabel McCorkindale Womens Christian Temperance Union c 1924
« on: Tuesday 27 September 22 02:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi Another convoluted question for you.

I was very fortunate, recently, to be given two photo albums found in a second-hand store. They belonged to my great uncle: Clement Wootten Lacey 1899 - 1985. It seems that he did a few Grand Tours, the most interesting being in 1924 where he accompanied Isabel McCorkindale. They seem to have spent some time in UK and Europe before travelling to USA. This was very much a working trip for her at least.

She is a very interesting lady for her time. Wiki article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isabel_McCorkindale
She was born in Scotland but moved to Australia in 1900

I have several photos which might be her and even some that I think might be her extended family in Scotland.

I wonder if anyone here is connected to this family. Alternatively, do you have any idea whether these would be of interest to anyone? Apart from the general interest in the story and the photos of my own family, I don't really need to keep the hard copies of the rest.
The tourist photos are fascinating and there are also some images of the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley Stadium in April 1924

The Common Room / Medical Records 1957 UK
« on: Thursday 22 September 22 09:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I have tried to search the forum but haven't found what I am looking for.

Is it possible to find medical records from 1957?

They concern my late mother. Only recently I have found out that she was pregnant with a second child in 1957. Her health was very poor and she had been advised against further pregnancies. The only letter I have about this was telling her sister that she was in hospital (at about 5 months) and they were talking about delivering the baby by Caesarian Section at 7 months, so about mid-September 1957, apparently.
There is no other information until a letter written in April 1958, no mention of a baby so presumably it did not survive but I am not sure if it even made it to a live birth.

I think it would have probably been Redhill Hospital as that is where she died in December 1958.
There are some rumours that she died in childbirth but there is no mention on her death certificate so I wonder if the two stories have become confused (she was in Surrey, her family was in Australia). Nobody alive now who would know.

Australia / Re: Passenger List enquiry

Thank you all so much.
Wow, that was careless of me to get his journey the wrong way.
I wondered if ship ownership was a bit disrupted by the war. Thank you for your help.

I wonder what possessed him to make that journey at that time?

Australia / Passenger List enquiry
« on: Thursday 22 September 22 01:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I have a passenger list from August 1945 showing my Grandfather travelling from Southampton UK, to Sydney, Australia.
Stemship Line: Cunard White Star Limited, and the closest I can find for the name of the ship is Rangitata, however when I serach for that ship it is registered to the New Zealand Shipping Company.

I am just wondering if during this unsettled time, did they "code share" in the way airlines do today?
I will try to attach a copy of the document I am using

Thanks in advance

I ran this by my husband and he is pretty sure that we are not connected to any of the names you have listed. Sorry

Thank you all for your help. I will try to find out. Distance really is an issue.

Guy, I went to live with grandparents after that, until my grandmother died when I was four and I returned to my Father. I don't think anyone would have been looking at my mental health.

Thank you.

I’m sorry, this probably sounds totally illogical. I don’t really think I killed her, nor really contributed to her death. I would just like to know if I had done anything with that knife to try to wake her.
It doesn’t prey on my mind all the time but I would like to put the sense of unease to bed.

I’m just wondering if it might be possible to see the records....

Her certificate gives the underlying conditions as the cause of death, but my concern is that I may have inflicted wounds on her as I tried to wake her. Not significant in causing death, but still.....

More than one member of the very dysfunctional family felt it was ok to say those things in my hearing. I know it shouldn't matter really. Even if I did wound her it wasn't intended as harm, but I'm starting to obsess about it at times.

I don't know if anyone can help me. I wonder if there is any way of seeing part of the hospital records of my mother from 1958? I think there's a 100 year limit, but might it be waived for exceptional circumstances? Are they likely to even exist?
My mother died in Redhill Hospital in Surrey on 1958. I was 2yrs old.
I was always told that I had killed her (i know, right?) and assumed it was the pregnancy which had led to her ill health and subsequent death. However I have found letters which detail that I was alone with her at home for several hours after she had collapsed. Also that I was carrying a knife when we were found.
I am now haunted by the thought of what little Annette might have done in innocence, to try to wake mum up.

Is there any hope of finding the truth? There is no one still alive who would know
