Hi, I stumbled upon your post. I am currently doing my tree, and my grandmother was Margaret O’Brien, born of John, Derrygassan. I think that my great grandfather was the John you are asking about. There was only that O’Brien family in Derrygassan at the time I believe.

Trying again to see if Janeyrose88 notices this time. (Still can't PM her.)

John was also my great-grandfather. Margaret's brother Patrick was my grandfather. Be great to make contact.

Antrim / Re: Coastguard - North Antrim

Hello this is a query 10 years after the last conversation below about William Henry Chard on rootschat. ...Any light you can shed on my ancestors will be gratefully appreciated.

Deborah,

Sorry for the delay in replying.  Yes, it was his coastguard work that took him to Ireland. He went first to Donegal in 1840 and on to Antrim in 1843.

Rose Anne McNeill was a native of County Antrim. She was born on 27 May 1832 to father Daniel, a farmer. William Henry and Rose Anne married on 12 Jun 1860 in Layde parish, Antrim, witnessed by Michael McQuaig & Alexander Gray.

Superb!

This is just what I was looking for.   I like to have at least three separate sources of information linking one generation to the next, particularly where the given names are common ones.  (Too many links made seem to be driven by hope rather than hard evidence.)  This is the third such source in this case, which nails it for me.

Thanks a lot for the help.

And Leib would appear to be a Yiddish name which means lion.

So, "lion Leib" is simply the name in both Hebrew and Yiddish, as well possibly being a play on words.

Arthur,

Thanks a lot for your efforts.

As regards the 3rd & 4th lines, I see Jacob and Kapil/Kapol as well.

Trying on-line translators myself, I think these lines say: "Rabbi lion Leib son of Jacob Kapil ...".

"Rabbi" is likely a mark of esteem rather than necessarily meaning a clergyman.  Not sure what the "lion" might mean.

I'm wondering if it means that Louis was originally "Leib son of Jacob Kapil".

I don't know what the rest means.

Any further help from anyone would be much appreciated.
