Hi

Just to let our Irish cousins know, DNA testing has confirmed that Francis and Peter Smith were indeed brothers who both came to Australia.  As well as James of course

Sadly my partners mum does not remember anyone in the family wearing that brooch, so it seems she will remain a mystery for now

Thanks very much to everyone for the help and suggestions  :)

Australia / Re: South Australia BDM index?

Hi

My comment was mainly a reference to lack of a comprehensive index, my apologies if I offended anyone.

I think it's great a non-profit is indexing them and I have no issue with paying a small fee to search.

I too spent hours trawling through the Digger Cd's   :-X

Of course the further back yo go the more holes there are in the registers as well regardless of which state you are searching in, I have people as late as 1893 who were in VIC/NSW and simply disappeared; well it certainly seems that way.

Maybe I have been doing this for too long as well  ;)

Could she have made a trip back to the UK at any point? The brooch is interesting...do you have any other later female photos of anyone else wearing it?
Carol

Hi Carol

I thought about that as well, but the three possible women are all having babies in Australia up until the 1890's and given the time it took for the sea voyage I don't think any of them could have gone back to the old dart in 1890.

Of course the pic may be of one of their sisters back in England who sent it via the post.

Great suggestion about the brooch, we will ask my partners mum about it

Regards

Given that the image is numbered, it would seem to date from between 1888 and 1901, which narrows things down quite a lot !
Wiggy already dated this at mid-late 1890's which is correct.
This bodice style didn't exist 1887-91.

Hi

So the bodice style and the numbering of the image mean that it cannot be Charlotte Quested, because the 11 Jul 1887 is the arrival date in Sydney.  The R.M.S Potosi left Tilbury on 24 Dec 1886

The woman in the image may well remain a mystery

Hi

Even if we allow for a birth date range from 1840 to 1860, assuming the image dates from 1890, then there is only one possibility I can see. Her immigration date is before Bendetti and Co began numbering the images though.  The other two possibles arrived in Australia in 1867 and 1871, bith a bit early I think

Charlotte Elizabeth Quested
Born; 16 Dec 1848, London, Middlesex, England
Immigration; 11 Jul 1887, Tilbury, England, UK

Thanks for all the help  :)

I only meant is a bit patchy compared to the other states because they are not all indexed and not all online and as it says they are working on the indexes .

One last question; Can anyone hazard a guess at the age of the woman in the picture?

We were thinking she looks around 50 years of age

Thanks
