Thank you, Willsy.

I do have Thomas and Jane at the top of my list.  Thomas and Lettice follow and then I also found a Thomas and Ann(e) as possibilities.  I wanted to find them in the next available record....the 1841 census.  Could not find a Thomas with a Jane.  Could not find a Thomas with a Lettice.  I really now favor the Thomas with Anne in 1841 because their son, Thomas, was born about 1816 and they also have a David and a Jane in the family.  My Thomas named one of his sons David and one of his daughters Jane.

So far, I still have nothing to really verify my assumptions.

Hello MargP,

That makes a great deal of sense....and I have not tried that avenue.  First thing tomorrow morning I will be doing just that.

Thank you,
Barbara

Yes, MargP, I checked and his father was a collier...in 1845.  None of the possibles was listed as a collier in the 1841 census.

Thanks for the heads up....I had not used that as a searcher.

The Common Room / Too many possible parents
« on: Saturday 04 January 14 22:42 GMT (UK)  »

My great great grandfather was Thomas Hugh, born in Pembrey, Carmarthenshire, Wales, sometime around 1817-1819.  I have found three couples who "qualify" as parents for Thomas....right area, right time, and right first name for the father (also named Thomas).

My question is how can I eliminate one, two, or even all three couples?  The first available census, 1841, shows one Thomas living with parents, Thomas and Ann, about eight miles from Pembrey.  That family also showed two other family members with similar names to our family.

The other possible sets of parents, Thomas and Annie, and Thomas and Jane (all married in Pembrey within reasonable dates), don't show up intact in the 1841 census.

Am I missing a clue?  Am I missing a source? I've spent hours on Ancestry.com, Family Search.org, Mocavo, Archives, etc. and I live in California so physically researching in Carmarthenshire is not an option.

I will appreciate any and all suggestions. :)

Shropshire / Re: Susanna Lewis b 1800 UptonWaters , Shropshire

Thank you to all who replied.  The marriage in Chester looks awfully good to me....would they have traveled the thirty-odd miles from Chester to Waters Upton in the late 1700s?  I did find two brothers for my Susanna...John b 1797 and Thomas b 1799, both in Edstaston (which is very near Wem).   I also tried to check on all the James Lewis entries in the 1841 census...hoping to fond him there with wife Susanna......found none so presume wife Susanna had died before 1841.  I will also try to locate the OPRs of the various parishes near Edstaston, Wem, Waters Upton, and St Oswald in Chester.
Any other ideas for ruling the marriage of James Lewis and Susanna Maddock/s in or out?  Advice very much appreciated.

 Susanna Lewis b 1800 UptonWaters , Shropshire

My gr gr gr grandmother was Susanna Lewis, born 1800 in Upton Waters . I have three sources for her Baptism in the Litchfield Diocese. Her parents are listed as James Lewis and Susanna. I've had no luck at all tracing those parents! I have tried other parishes nearby without results. It's as if they were dropped from Mars. I am limited to whatever I can discover on the Internet and will welcome any and all suggestions.

Thank you for another good idea!  I have ordered a birth record for Harriet.....think I will wait to see what that one shows before going after Ann.  I live in California so ordering certs in the UK gets expensive for me because of the exchange rate......I think that I must now pay $14.25 for a £7 order!!!!

Excellent thought......this is why having other people look at your problem is so rewarding.  I will send for a birth cert for Harriet and see what comes of it.

Thank you,
Barbara
