Hi Melvyn,

Good to hear from you.  I am interested in your Ling lineage.  Are you a direct descendent of William Ling.  I would be interested in knowing more about this line.  Email me directly if you like on

Regards
Kelly

Hi Deborah,

Great to hear from you!  :D  I feel like doing cartwheels right now!!  I have been stuck for ages on John and Mary Ling - I have a distant cousin in New Zealand who will be also doing cartwheels as well as she is also stuck on the same spot.

I had listed Henry, Alice, Susannah as siblings on my tree, but was not 100% certain this was correct.  It is wonderful to see its true.

If you like, have a look at my tree on Ancestry.  If you send me your direct email, I will send you a direct link invite.  Email me on

I would love to find out what other information you have and share what little I have.

Well, must go do some more cartwheels (and work).  Thank you so much for contacting me  :D

Hi Jenn,

Thanks heaps for this.  I had seen the marriage for Rose A S Ling, but had dismissed it because it didnt seem close enough to be her.  I never thought to check for the death under the married name.

Also, I didnt have the death date of Florence.  I had the marriage to Brooks, but nothing else.  Would I be correct in assuming Pres means Prestons, Victoria?

Thank you so much for your help.  I had been chasing my tail on this lot for a while.

Regards
Kelly

Hi,  I was hoping someone may have cd or free access to Victorian BDM site or possibly census.  I am trying to find details on Rosanna Priscilla Ling, born 1877, Moama, Victoria to Jonathan Ling and Fanny Stokes.  One of 10 children.  Family moved slowly up the coast settling in Bowral, NSW for a while, where most of the children were raised.  Rosanna just drops of the map from there.  I have searched as much as I can in NSW and was thinking that maybe she went back to Victoria.  Her father death certificate shows her at age 31 when he died in 1908 (in Wollongong).

If someone could possibly find marriage details, or death date or anything at all, it would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Kelly :)

Thank you Jenn and Judith for looking for me.  I have just had a breakthrough with John Henry's parents.

I came across a page from Keith Reeves on Rootsweb and this shows Mary Jane Bowen born about 1810 in London, married John Ling, also born about 1810 London, married 15th July 1834 Saint Bride, Fleet Street, London, one son, John Henry Ling, born 1836, London.

I have emailled Keith asking for any further information about John and Mary Ling.

I still havent figured out if the other Lings who migrated with John Ling are siblings.

Thank you for your help everyone.  It looks like I am finally going in the right direction.

Regards,
Kelly

Thanks for looking for me Shaz.  I am stumped on this branch of the family.  John and Mary Ling are such common names which makes it really hard to trace, plus I cannot find what part of England they came from.  Any locality information I have on Jonathon Henry just says London.

On the assisted passenger list which we think Jonathon Ling migrated to Australia on, it shows other Lings travelled with him, but no parents listed.  I am assuming that these other Lings are siblings, but I am not sure of this.

LING   ELIZTH   20   JUN   1856   ARTHUR THE GREAT
LING   GEORGE   13   JUN   1856   ARTHUR THE GREAT
LING   JOHN   14   JUN   1856   ARTHUR THE GREAT
LING   MARY ANN   18   JUN   1856   ARTHUR THE GREAT
LING   SARAH   16   JUN   1856   ARTHUR THE GREAT

Thanks for your help.  I will put the Lings you found on my possible list.

Regards,
Kelly :)

I am trying to find any information about my GGGF Jonathon Henry Ling, born approx 1836 in England, died 1908 Wollongong, NSW Australia. Married Fanny Stokes in Victoria Australia 1875, had ten children (Ellen Beatrice, Rosanna Priscilla, Helena Maud, William Henry, Emma, George Benjamin, Charles C, Blanche E, Florence A, Gwendoline M). Could have possible migrated to Australia as assisted immigrant in 1856 on "Arthur the Great".
Marriage certificate to Fanny Stokes shows his parents as John Ling and Mary Jane Bowen, death certificate shows parents as Francis and Mary.

Any information on his life in England, such as where he lived, sibliings, or his parents would be much appreciated.

Thank you
Kelly Bartley (nee Ling)

Thank you all so much for your help.  I am planning a trip in a couple of weeks to photograph Annies grave at Scone and visit the Scone Historical Society to find out more about what happened to Eva.  I will also visit Turanville whilst I am there.

To date I haven't purchased Eva's marriage certificate, only her birth certificate.  I have been trying to find out as much as possible without forking out a lot of money, but I think I have come to the point where I will have to purchase this or get a transcription.

I have also arranged a trip with my mother to see Eva's daughter in January.  Somewhere along the line Eva started using Annie instead.  Mum only ever knew her as Annie.

Thanks again for all your help.  I will get a couple of transcriptions and post again when I need more help.

I am so pleased I was referred to this site.  You have all been most helpful.

Regards
Kelly  :D

Thanks again everyone! :)

I think I will believe the birth register and take Annie as being born in September 1859.

I cant find much info on James at all.  All I have is his possible birth year of 1844, that he was 39 when Eva was born and he was married in London, but I am not sure any of that is entirely correct.  There are thousands of James Robinson on any lists that I look at.  I am not even sure when he died.

Eva died in 1967, but she revealed very little about her past to my family.  We always thought she may have been Indigenous Australian.  When my grandmother was challenged many years ago about this, she refused to talk about it.  When I started researching her a couple of months ago, we found out her parents came from England.  The only photo we have of her is attached.

Eva married William Ling in Bowral, so maybe her father remarried and moved down there.  Maybe I will have to go forwards to go backwards.

Eva's youngest daughter is still alive, although very old and frail.  I may have to make a trip up to see her see if she is able to supply any information about her grandfather or grandmother.

Regards
Kelly
