Durham / Re: Jacob Solomon (brickwall)
« on: Sunday 18 February 24 18:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Ormewalk
It's been 10years since i enquired about Jacob Solomon who is my 3xGr Grandad. His Father was Thomas Salmon and his Mother was Jane Gray, his Grandfather was John Salmon and Grandmother Elizabeth Donnison. Jacob married Elizabeth Robinson in 1843 in Kelloe County Durham and had seven children of which his eldest daughter married John Creswell on Christmas Day 1863. It was Jacob's mother who died 19th Aug 1865 in Collier Row.If you look up Peter D Salmon born 1820 & died 1822 you will find that his middle name is Donnison (who is his Granmother) and that his parents are Thomas & Jane Salmon.Your 2xgr grandad John & Catherine i believe had six children but only two were still alive at the turn of the century, Elizabeth 1864/1930 & Edward 1865/1924.I hope this helps your research.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Abbreviation on 1939 register
« on: Monday 19 December 22 11:13 GMT (UK)  »
This might help.
On the 1939 Register where someone has re-married you will see a date and a code such as EDA 1 c NR 213, EDA. refers to the enumeration code for the district that reported the change and 1.C.NR213 is the ref no. for the form used to record it. If you use the GRO ref code at the following link https://www.findmypast.co.uk/articles/1939-register-enumeration-districts you will see that EDA refers to Hampshire &  Municipal Borough of Aldershot. The date is when the register was altered, this could be when the person was divorced or married.

Hi Andy J2022
Thank you for replying.I didn't know about the R.N being awarded the Africa Star, i will go and check over my Fathers records again, it would make since if the medal was my Fathers as i can't see how if it were my Uncle's it would be in the family's possession. I've saved all your notes to help my reseach in the future.
Once again

« on: Monday 12 December 22 16:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All
While researching my Father & Uncle's war records i have come across a spare Africa Star medal in their collection, it's not my Father's as he was in the Royal Navy ,it's not my Uncles because i have his already, the posability is that it is another Uncle's who served in Egypt & Greece with the 16/2 Heavy A.A Regiment, he was a POW from about 1941 (Stalag 18A),my question is would he recieve the Africa Star and if so what other Medals could he have been awarded??

Hi Christine53
Thank you for your reply, i had never heard of a Archibald and wondered if it was some kind of machine gun. Do you think going by my relatives discription they were using it directly at the German trenchs ?
once again thank you for replying.

hi
while reading a relatives WW1 diary the following notes were used,"9-30 to 11.30am Bombarded German units with rifle grenades & Archibald, very successful, 15 in trenches or on parapet, silenced enemy trench mortar". My question is what is a Archibald??

Hi MaxD
Thank you for your help, I will pass it on to my friend who is trying to connect it to a relative of her late husband. The following is what she knows " I know that my husbands great grandfather, Richard Walkley Chaloner, received a medal, a volunteer Long service medal in 1896 and he was a sergeant? As I have the 3 stripes. Any information would be appreciated. Richard was in the 1st Volunteer Battalion P.W.O West Yorkshire Regiment. The photo was taken in Shields Road Newcastle Upon Tyne." Once again thank you for your help.
