Norfolk / Re: Graves great ayrmouth

The Great Yarmouth cemetery registers, that is of the actual burial plot are at the Norfolk Record Office on fich.  They cover the new cemetery in Yarmouth & the one in Gorleston, those are the municipal ones.

There's a transcription on headstones in Yarmouth library, not sure if it cover 1887, though.  Have you tried Find A Grave, or there are several other sites that might have an entry for him.

I see he's in the parish burials register, but he could have been buried in any of the ones I've mentioned.  A lot of tombstones have gone from the churchyard this century. I have searched for my G-grandfathers grave and I have the plot number, I could find no headstone ???

Armed Forces / Re: Napoleonic/Crimea Women camp followers
« on: Tuesday 02 April 13 20:29 BST (UK)  »
Hi Carol

No expert ::)  But if you mean ordinary soldiers, there was an allowance of 6 wives per company, I think ::)  In the Napoleonic wars anyway.  Officers were accompanied by their wives if they wanted to take them I know of officers wives who were present at battles in the Peninsular War (Spain).

The soldiers would have gone out on the transports with their husbands.  There were wives on the Birkenhead when she sank off the coast of South Africa, that would be between the Napoleonic and Crimean wars.

There are army BMD records on Findmypast, they would record the information about camp followers.  I don't know if they cover the dates your interested in ???

I hope this has helped . . . a little

Hi shack224

On Ancestry in Hughes Business Directory for 1921:-

Moss, Samuel (fruit) Spitalfields Mkt, E1

less likely Post Office 1934

308 Albert Rd, Moss, William; Grocer

You can also find Directories on this site:

http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp

I found no references to Samuel Moss on it, but you might find it useful.

Did you find Mary Ann on later census?

If not 1881 in London RG11/731/40/5

1891 in London  RG12/20/9/11,  in both these she's a servant in 1891 with her daughter Gertrude

1901 in Hull  RG13/4476/158/15  with Gertrude and her husband James William Law & 2 daughters

I'm sure you already have these ;D

Not finding marriages is a bit of a habit his son Jessie had the banns read, but no marriage that we can find ::)

Looks like a swagger stick, though he has no obvious rank badges.  I don't know if an ordinary soldier would carry one.

Middle east in WW1, just a thought ???
