Armed Forces / Regretful notification of the passing of MaxD
« on: Sunday 08 August 21 20:37 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.
I know that my grandfather spent many an hour on this site and thoroughly enjoyed communicating with all of you that share his interest in the military! He would routinely update me with who he had helped or the new bits he had learnt from you all!

With deep sadness,
Zoe

https://www.maltaramc.com/regsurg/rs1870_1879/rmo1870.html covers the medical angle but will help I think.

Malta was a vital garrison of the British Empire in the period, mainly for its harbours but also as a staging post in the middle east.

World War One / Re: Alexander 'Alick' Buchan Yule Drummond, Army Service Corps

The two sentences that begin " Previous to this....." aren't quite right.  The Infantry had the bulk of the Labour Battalions, Infatry Works Companies and  and Labour Companies which although they carried a regimental title, didn't "belong" to that unit and worked under a Regional Command in UK initially. The RA did not have labour units per se.  The ASC did have ASC Labour Companies and the RE had Labour Battalions, these were converted to Labour Corps in June 1917.
No real quarrel with the rest of it.  However I would expect to see a Labour Corps number in his record and I still haven't found a medal record with the number you gave earlier.

The above is too simplistic for words, I'd recommend No Labour No Battle by Lee and Starling for the full picture.

More speculation, a brigade (?) staff officer with some of the brigade other rank staff?

They aren't all ASC men and the presence of a staff officer in the centre (cap badge and arm armband)  may suggest a training course but a concert party can't be ruled out (or in!).

Has his number been correctly transcribed?  I can't seem to find him in medal rolls -  375927 Alexander Drummond appears in the ASC rolls.

From one who knows.  A checker did what it said on the tin.  1000 somethings were on the paperwork on an arriving vessel, the checkers checked the consignment was correct.

It is the 32 Division AQ diary that has the figures for 2 KOYLI, not the KOYLI war diary as I stated before.  Sorry about that.

Could well be.  The NF diary just says that the surplus men (ie not the training cadre) went to the base.  The 2 KOYLI diary has 23 OR reinforcements, (not specified which regiment)  joining in the week ending 1 Jun 1918 which would be about right, the previous 2 weeks had a total of 11.
