Thanks to "shanew147" and "taramcdsmall" for your quick and informative replies.
This search has started because my wife has asked me to find out some information on her Grandfather (who she never met) but mostly for my father-in-law who is now in his 78th year, not in good health and would like some information on his father who disappeared in 1944 when he was 10.
I have ordered his birth certificate from the information received, but is there any way of tracing his death as it highly unlikely he is still alive after 105 years.
Also I would like to find out his whereabouts in the years since 1944 (a long shot I know), I know that prior to signing up to the 11th Battalion Rifle Brigade (who were apparently Home Defence) in 1941, he was an Upholsterer and worked at Elliman's Upholsters on Camden Street, Dublin.
We have wanted to find this information for years, but until my father-in-law found an old wallet in a box in the loft with his Attestation Papers which gave us a date of birth and an address in Dublin, we had nothing to work on.
Sadly we have no photographs of him.
Once again, thank you.
Brian Carter.
