West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / Re: Accident in Coal Pit 1884

Thank you for the help, and for the word of caution. However, on this occasion virtually everything ties up. His age and address are correct, and the report confirms the story that he has told the family over the years.

I have sent a request for info to the ERI and await their response.

Much obliged again for the responses.

West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / Accident in Coal Pit 1884
« on: Tuesday 17 November 09 17:26 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to get further info about and accident to my grandfather in a coal pit (unknown). John Wilson, aged 12, was run over by a coal waggon on the 11th March 1884. He was taken to Edinburgh Royal and had his right leg amputated.

I got this info from the Scottish Mining website and have also had great help from fellow Rootschatters - can anyone add anything please?

John was living at Gavieside, West Calder at the time. He later went on to be a tailor and spent the rest of his life in Stirling.

Lanarkshire / Re: Rail accident at Calderbank in 1887

Can I thank everyone who helped me with this request. It now appears that the John Wilson involved in the Calderbank incident was not my Grandpa.

By pure chance, looking through the Scottish Mining website  I have found my Grandfather's accident. It happened in a coal pit (not named) on the 12th March 1884 and was apparently reported in the Scotsman on 14th March. He was 12 years old and as a result of the accident he was taken to Edinburgh Royal and had his leg amputated.

If anyone can add any info to this sketchy outline, I would be very grateful.

Thanks again for the responses. The latest from cookies4 seems to indicate this is not my John Wilson since the parents names are different. However, I will keep down this line of enquiry and see where it leads.

Many thanks again.

Many thanks for responses. Yes, I have both reports mentioned, I just wondered if there might be more information held at a local level, which might follow up on the casualties.
Thanks for your help. :)

Lanarkshire / Rail accident at Calderbank in 1887

Can someone point me in the right direction to find more information on the above accident. My grandfather John Wilson had only one leg and he used to tell us that he lost it in a railway accident. I have found out recently that at the Calderbank accident, in addition to five men being killed, a number were badly injured. These included a man called John Wilson who suffered a broken leg at the accident and was taken to Glasgow Royal. I would like to find out if this man was my Grandpa.

The accident happened on Tuesday August 16 1887.

Any help would be appreciated.
