Ok,
So I want to say one moe thing. Malcolm, his father, brother and sister are all DNA tested.  His father has a 67 markers YDNA, with Family Tree DNA. His sister, autosomal with ancestry.com.  Mal is waiting on his Familytree DNA tests Big Y and his brother waiting on his 67 marker results as well. Aso far we have no McARthur result for their father.  However we do have  several McDonald/MacDonald, McNeil/McNeill, McMullin, Buie, Cameron, Campbell, Carmichael, Best, Woodruff, to name a few.

I was told these men are different branches of the same lineage of the McArthur family.  That  family surnames in the Scottish Highlands were named differently.  Can someone explain how that came about. Who was responsible for naming the families. We are hoping through Mals Big Y that we can narrow down some of those names.  I know there are a lot more name s in the lineages. We are p;art of the Arthur project on familytreedna, there are 39 McrArthur, Mals father doesnt match any of them and w have also joined other projects on familytreedna so we are trying anything and everything.

Thanks again

I would like to add to my own post, that prior to marriage and immigranting to Tasmania in December 1856, John McArthur according to his marriage certificate was residing at Cathcart, then in Renfrewshire.  He was a Farm Servant.  His father Duncan McArthur was deceased by the 2 December.

Thanks

Hi, To add to my son McArthurs1828, post.  We have a "For sale" Advertisement, plus a "Immigration to Tasmania", advertisement and the full Ships manifest. John McArthur and his wife Isabella Stevenson, were married 2 December 1856 at Cambuslang just prior to their embarkation on the Broomielaw as Bounty Immigrants.  The Broomielaw, left the Clyde, Glasgow 20 December, 1856 on her maiden voyage, after an eventful trip they arrived in Launceston, Tasmania, 31 March, 1856.

Malcolm has become familiarized with Scotland's People but so far without success.  I have previously had success on Rootschat with the wifes family, the Stevensons of Cambuslang, where the couple were married.   To date we havent had  any success other that the marriage certificate and the Tasmanian side that unfortunately, does not include any dates of birth or  birthplace for our John McArthur 1828.  On the certificate as 28 years of age.  Father Duncan McArthur and Margaret Smith.

We are hoping there was some detail in the records of the selection agents of the Immigrants to Tasmania. Such as names of someone back home in Scotland, to be in touch with in the case of emergency or death on board etc.

John and Isabellas sponser was Ronald Cameron Gunn from Tasmania.  Doesnt appear to be any records for him at the moment. He hired out the Immigrants to the Public.  John was a Ploughman and Isabella his wife.

Thanks for any help

Hi Fay,Lovely to meet you albeit over the net.  I am deep in dna results  with my daughter whose father the McArthur and Stevensons are.  You have just written in time for me to add names  to check against dna matches for her.  she is 42.  Have any of your  Stevenson  or Spiers had their dna tested.  Have you also been following Anne-P and seen where she has found a illegitimate daughter Christina Campbell, daughter of Isabella Stevenson.  Christina born 1850, You can follow Anne and my conversations I would think. Back in February.  Haven't  got back to Anne_P but hopefully she can see this reply.  I contacted an in law of Christina Black nee Campbell through Genes Reunited.  He lives  mainland Australia and we have exchanged certificates of Christina's family of Black. We both purchased from Scotland's People.  Now to have you contact me re Mary Stevenson's family of Spier's that is great and the photos would be lovely.    I still haven't a photo of John and Isabella but have  bits and peice's from the newspaper.  I have death certificates of both John and Isabella, their marriage certificate, where they lived in Tasmania and grave stone at Patersonia, in Tasmania where hey loved and died. I am in the process of putting up more of John Stevenson's family so now I can add Marys line, but i havent got her children's births dates as yet. Probably could find them on Scotland's people. Did my daughters dna on ancestry, so have joined that as well in order to see results. Thanks for being in touch Fay, I am Edie.
Hello.
I am a direct descendant of Jessie Hamilton Buchanan Spiers, who I believe you have listed as Janet Spiers in the 1861 Census (refer below). I have a copy of her birth certificate. She was born to Robert Spiers and Mary Stevenson on 26th October 1855 at Chapelforte in Cambuslang. She is my great grandmother.  My Aunt was named Jessie Speirs in remembrance of her grandmother. (Unfortunately they spelt the Speirs incorrectly!). I have a photo of Jessie and her husband, James Miller Stevenson, if you are interested.

Hi Fay, Have you seen anything about Marys sister Isabella and her husband John McArthur at all.  Did they write home from Australia to Scotland.  having trouble finding his mother Margaret Smith and reputed father Duncan McArthur.  Duncan was deceased by Isabella Stevenson and John marriage 2 December 1856. John has no record to say where in Scotland he was born or the actual date ofhis birth and birthplace in 1828. Would any of your Stevenson family know that.

Hi there, not sure who asked the question, but My great grandmother was Sarah Jane Lane nee Hedges.  For many years several of us were looking over the Braintree, Essex lot of Hedges, I think it was as they had a Joseph and several other members who matched.  We could never find our Sarah Jane until the 1851 Census came into vogue on the net and there she was  at Ware Hertford, with the rest of her family.  Then in the 1871 census, they decided on a name change and became BIRD.  this was picked up by another of my first cousins wives who very cleverly took all the christian names without a surname in the 1871 census and the whole family showed up as BIRD.  I wouldn't know why this was.  Maybe could have been his mothers maiden name.Elizabeth the daughter was blind, so maybe was trying to keep her out of the workhouse. Don't know.  Anyway Sarah Jane Hedges married my Great Grandfather who was born in 1839, son of Charles Lane and Mary Ann Crane.  Sarah was his second wife, he had been married before with a daughter Martha. who was born in Colchester in 1865.
Joseph Crane Lane was in the first Royal Scots for 20 years 1861 to 1881.  Sarah Jane HEDGES and all the 9 children were on all posts with him.. They had children born in Scotland, Ireland and England. She was a Tailoress.  My grandfather Joseph Henry LANE was born at Fort George, Inverness, Scotland, in 1875. Off hand Sarah and Joseph were married in 1872 but down in Essex.
I haven't got past c1818 for the birth of Joseph HEDGES, but once saw a birth of a Elizabeth in Ely in Cambridge who I wondered if she had been his sister.  Now this is the family for Joseph and Emily Linton.
Joseph HEDGES c1818 Cambridge? (sawyer)
married Emily Linton 24 Sep;t 1838 All Saints & Saint John, Hertford, Hertford, Eng. Husbands father William HEDGES.His wife Emily LINTON c1815 christened 8 October 1815, All Saints, St John, Hertford, Hertford. Father Thomas LINTON

Children Chr St John &All Saints, probably Ware, Hertford
Mary Ann, HEDGES, chr 1 Sept 1839, Hertford, Hertford
George HEDGES c1841 Hertford, (Sawyer) married Sarah Ann HEDGES
Joseph HEDGES  16 October 1842. St John & All Saints Hertford

William HEDGES  b8 December 1844, ch 5 Jan  1845 Parish of Brickendon, Hertford, married Isabell Bardell, 6 April 1875 St James Bethnal Green, Her father was James Bardell.  In 1891 census, William he was a Brick maker and Brick Layer. Isabella was born 27 Oct 1854, Ware, Hertfod.  I have ten children for them.

Now this is the important part.  I have the death cert for Joseph Hedges BIRD, 1886 aged 69,  Informant was his son in law Joseph LANE my GT GF. He died of Bronchitis.  Died at looks like Picketts Yard, Brentwood. Reg Dist, Billericay. County of Essex. I have Emily his wifes death cert as well.  they were both BIRD at death. She died 7 August 1885. Cancer

Ann HEDGES ch 10 June 1849 Ware, Hertford
Henry Mathew HEDGES ch 10 Aug 1851
Emily HEDGES  ch21 FEb 1847 Hertford married 1868 to John BERRY

Sarah Jane HEDGES 1854, married Joseph Crane LANE, 1sdt Royal Scots.  On Josephs death,  Sarah was a widow at age 42, her  2nd husband at the age of 79 was David Theobold.
Elizabeth HEDGE 18 May 1856 Ware, Hertford.  She was blind from birth.

That should do for now
Since Iwrote the above , I have read al;l 35 posts.  I see to have any contact or reply I haveto do another two posts, so this is one.
Hello again. Post number three.  I note this thread is a very old one, but hope some of my lot will jump on the wagon.  It is more than likely we are all related anyway.
