Yes - thank you! It is very useful. I don't come on this site as often as I used to so apologies for the delay in replying and thanking you. I continue to struggle with my Welsh connections so this will be of great help.

Thanks for confirming I'm on the right track Phil and thanks for responding Rog

I'm pleased to have found out a bit more about what he did. The only thing he ever told me about his time in the war (and that's my fault because I never asked!) was that he spent some time stationed at St Denys near Southampton.

I'm confident that the service record is his because the address is correct and I'm fairly sure that the medals index is too because the number is the same - well one of them is! The original number 32636 on the service record is crossed out and the number above it it has TA/5/36592 and below it is 148554 - this is the number I used to trace the medals index.

By the way his name was William Herbert Middleton.

Hello

I wonder if anyone can help me. I've found the service record of my grandfather, who joined the Yorkshire Regiment in July 1917. When I looked for his medals record, it said he was in the Royal Garrison Artillery. There's not much info on this - other than his name, rank, number and Corps - just the roll number for the Vicotry and British medals.

Why would he have transferred? Would there be anymore information I can find out about his service - ie what theatre he would have served in, what regiment he was in?

I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks
Sarah

You are right that the family were quite well-to-do - his father was a stockbroker and seems to be reasonably well-off (well, he was until the stock market crash!) I'll see if I can find out a bit more from my father-in-law.

Thank you for your help thus far.

That's interesting - so if he was in the army post ww1 then I assume he was a regular soldier?

I may have overdone the reduction in size a little!

This should be better...

Hi there

I'm thrilled to say that my father-in-law has just found an interesting haul of photos including this one...

This is his uncle, William B Anderson, born in Broughty Ferry, near Dundee in 1900. I wonder if anyone can point me in the direction of his regiment in WW1?

Thank you

Sarah
