The will of Thomas Moses of Stanhope answers a lot of questions for me.  It mentions his brother Joshua of Wolsingham who had two sons Thomas and John.  He also mentions in the will his other brother Samuel.  Joshuas, Thomas had a son called George I believe he is he George in Johns will along with cousins Thomas and Isaac being Samuels sons. This would explain why so much land around Wolsingham belonged to John and Thomas  George had a bastardly son to Margaret Fenwick in 1798.  He recognised him on his death bed and bequeathed him a large amount of money.  My husband is directly descended from George who was his great, great, great grandfather.

Thanks Christine

Hi Mandy

I need to know where you are descended from.  I think you may have the Stanhope and Houghton le Spring Moses muddled up.

Our Isaac was the bastardly son of George Moses.  acknowledged by George on his death bed. ISAAC FENWICK BORN 1ST AUGUST 1797 IN UPPER TOWN WOLSINGHAM TO MARGARET FENWICK.FATHER GEORGE ON HIS DEATH BED ACKNOWLEDGED  ISAAC  and IN HIS WILL LEFT HIM MONEY AND ESTATES TO BE MANAGED BY THOMAS POTTS
HE LEFT £400 TO BE GIVEN WHEN ISAAC REACHED 21.  THE INTEREST MADE ON THIS AMOUNT WAS TO BE USED FOR MAINTENANCE AND FOR AN APPRENTICESHIP IF NECESSARY. THIS EQUATES TO ABOUT £20,000 IN TODAYS MONEY SO QUITE A WEALTHY MAN
THOMAS POTTS   ALSO STOOD AS SURETY FOR HIM WHEN HE MARRIED MARY MEGGESON AND HE WAS A GOOD FRIEND OF THE FAMILY. I have a copy of Thomas Potts will which gives details of his friendship with the family.
