Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Hannah Elliott/Copley/Saxton Thorpe Hesley
« on: Wednesday 02 June 21 17:26 BST (UK)  »
Have checked my subscription site and like you can find very little.  Have never come across a woman with 2 maiden names!  Understandable however as b before parents married.
Have looked for her as Hannah Goddard/Gothard with no luck.

I can confirm a ma on 5/7/1818 at Rotherham Minster between Samuel Goddard and Sophia Elliott.
Both were single, of the parish, by Banns. Witnesses were : Mary Ramsdins (? Ramsden?) and John Jessop and both signed with a x.

Charles son of Michael Copley and Hannah was b at Thorp Hesley

Clara Saxton - poss b 1859 - I found a bu 31/8/1929 aged 70 at Thorp Hesley so likely her but I cant find her on GRO either.
There is an 1881 cen for David Copley with wife Sarah at Barley Hole hamlet, Thorp Hesley showing a b date of 1842.

This is a very elusive family.  Best of luck.

Sorry shouldn't have been so hasty.  On same subscription site are 2 baptisms in Shepshed.
William 23/1/1871 mother's name Mary
Arthur  18/12/1864  mother again Mary

No clues on  GRO, b or bp for Lois.

Hope this helps

Have checked GRO and  none of the children have a mother's maiden name shown
However on my subscription site Arthur b 1864 and William 1870 have a mother's maiden name of Cotton.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Marriage Cert. Bride's Father?
« on: Friday 01 January 21 16:16 GMT (UK)  »
Certainly Amy b 1863 cant be the one as she is too young to be on her second marriage in 1872.

Interesting the name Rothwell keeps appearing.
There is a marriage on 5/7/1760 of Henry Rothwell to Damaris Sutcliff at Wardleworth Rochdale. (Does Damaris mean "of the sea")

Could Amy have been illegit and put an incorrect name for her father - might it be De Demaris?
I realise its a bit too early to be Amy's parents but possibly worth bearing in mind.

Lincolnshire / Re: Benjamin Favell born 1683

I can't find a  bp for Benjamin but have found 2bp's at Wigtoft not too far from Swineshead.
Martha Favell bp Jan 1684 d/o Anthony & Rebecah
Ellean Favel bp 28/2/1685 d/o Anthony and Rebecah

Could be Benjamin's sisters.
Best of luck

A rather belated reply - only just seen this post.

Wlliam Birks was my g/g/gfather and Joseph Oxley his grandfather who is living with them in 1841.
William's family is still at 37 Mundys Row in 1961.
I know he was a Coal Miner but unfortunately I do not know where he worked.
I have a very detailed family tree so if you need any more details please get in touch - are you related to the Birks or Oxleys?

I can't find any trace of him either but I noticed on 1841 cen he was a Seaman - perhaps he went back to that.?

Rutland / Re: MARS(T)ON family in Oakham

Have searched all the records I have and cannot find a ma. in Rut or Leics.
I assume you have Thos and Mary's children -  Mary, Thomas, Thomas, Elizabeth, Isabella and William

The only bp  for the father found is Thomas  11/4/1712 in Uppingham s/o Robert (no mother's name given).
Date wise it is ok but none of his children was called Robert so I'm doubtful.

As you say an elusive family.

Best of luck
