can't contribute anything about Philip's parents but in addition to being a grocer were you aware of

Webster & Co.s Directory of Bristol & Glamorganshire 1865

"John, Philip, grocer and provision merchant, deputy-registrar of marriages for Merthyr District, agent for the Star Life, the Volunteer Life and the Accidental Death Insurance Companies, 2 Canon Street"

Glamorganshire / Re: Ellen Lewis born c1809 Swansea

I was in Swansea Archives today and amongst other things checked for your Ellen Lewis. Nothing under St Marys or Llansamlet - which covered Swansea at this period. Also checked some of the adjoining parishes w/out success.
Think I spotted the Elinor you mention ie. "Elinor Lewis, father Thomas Lewis, bap 18/5/1808, born 30/4/1808".
Swansea has copied the Parish Registers for West Glamorgan and I found and photocopied Ellen Lewis' marriage to John Drew on 3/10/1836. Details are - both of St Mary's parish, no record of consent, banns were read, both Ellen and John signed (rather than made mark) and the witnesses were Nicholas Drew and Evan Daniel (note - Evan is not significant since he witnessed virtually every St Mary marriage of the period!!).
Did a quick baptismal check for both John Drew and Nicholas Drew under St Mary's but no success.

Can scan and send image of Ellen's marriage record if you wish (if you provide e mail address via private message)

Slater's Directory of Berks, Corn, Devon......1852-1853. Under Painswick it records

Inns and Public Houses  - Royal Oak, George Abell
Maltsters - Abell, George, Painswick

I'm not sure why Phoebe is quoting "Leominster". If you look at the actual census sheet and transcribed schedule details with the Duggans at No 182 they include

Reg Dist - Hereford & Dore
Sub Dist - Hereford City
Enumeration Dist - 6
Civil Parish - All Saints
Ecclesiastical Dist - All Saints
Municipal Borough - Hereford
Municipal Ward - Leominster

The Townships/Civil Parishes of Leominster Borough/Leominster Out come under the Reg Dist of Leominster.

P.S - just noticed date of original post!!! None of this may be very relavant

The address column is headed with what looks like '181 Edar St' (the Duggans are at No 182) but if you click on the census image of the previous page the address column is clearly headed 'Edgar St' and no 179 appears at the foot of the page.

FindMyPast gives the address as Edgar St, All Saints, Hereford - Leominster is listed as the "Municipal Ward".

I wondered whether it might be 'H roper', short for 'Horse Roper'? Plenty of those down the mines

Regarding Cefncoch being an inn/tavern, the 1891 Ordnance Survey Map (viewable on line - British History Online) identifies the Cefn-coch Hotel - a couple of hundred yards east of Waun-fch.
Rhyd-y criw is there, near the Church of St Mary and St Egryn.
