Glamorganshire / The Daventry may have sailed from Cardiff
« on: Tuesday 10 October 17 10:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi

On the 16th August 1891 one of my ancestors was the ships' cook and steward on board the Daventry.

He died onboard when the ship was in the Red Sea. Rather bizarrely the cause of death was recorded as sunstroke. In the Marine Register, although he was Irish and from Waterford City it states his last known place of abode was Cardiff. Yet he does not appear in the census of Wales of 1891.

What I am looking for are details about the ship - the Daventry - what type of ship it was who owned it. Where did it start the voyage and what was its final destination and the route it followed. And why wasn't he using factor 50 sunscreen.....you'd of thought a cook of all people would know the affect of heat is dangerous

Waterford / Can anyone workout the place name
« on: Wednesday 04 October 17 13:59 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

All my attempts to work out this place name in County Waterford have so far failed. It looks like Carrighbrahen based on the letters in other parts of the birth register. I've been on logainm ie to try to find a match and still no luck. Perhaps it has been incorrectly written down.

The Common Room / Help needed about matters maritime.
« on: Friday 29 September 17 18:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi

A  number of my mother's family were mariners but I am struggling with what exactly the records are that I have found for one of them. Is there someone who understands this topic that can answer some questions.

What is the bit about money advance about? Was he not paid on discharge? I presume he was hired for the duration of a voyage and not a permanent employee. What does it mean by deserted, surely that would mean he would be left in the country they docked at.

The ships were barque which I believe were the sailing ships used up to this time. What sort of conditions did the sailors live in vis a vis accomodation. Would they be fed properly? The amount of money shown as payment for the duration seems generous or is that not the case.

Family History Beginners Board / Can someone shed light on cause of death
« on: Wednesday 27 September 17 15:35 BST (UK)  »
The attachment shows the death of one of my ancestors. I am struggling with the cause cited in the register. It seems to have been written as Philusis and was certified medically. What is it and what would have caused it? What is the significance of 4 months certified, if that has any significance?

Wexford / Breen and Dowling families of Wexford
« on: Tuesday 19 September 17 14:15 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to discover who the parents were of two particular familes in Wexford in the mid 19th century.

In 1873 Patrick Breen of  Main Street North, Wexford married Eliza Dowling (some records spell it as Dawling but I believe it is Dowling). Patrick was born abt 1834 and died in 1912. In the census record of 1901 and 1911 he records his occupation an organist and later as professor of music. Eliza was born about 1850 and died in 1915. Eliza may have been born Elizabeth Frances Dowling!

Is Breen a Wexford surname and does anyone recognise him in their research? Who were his parents ?

Is Dowling a Wexford surname? I believe Eliza is most likely the daughter of Edward Dowling and Eliza Shudall who may have been from the Rathangan area of Co Wexford. Again does anyone recognise these people in their research ? Can they confirm who her parents were etc.

Waterford / School Records RC Schools in Waterford City early 1900's
« on: Monday 18 September 17 19:18 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping that school records were kept and still exist but don't no where to start looking for them.

The period I am particularly interested in is around the 1901 and 1911 censuses. It is a hunch that the children may have been educated at St Stephen's later De La Salle (if my memory serves me). The families were RC and lived in Mayor's Walk and Beau Street. My hunch is that may St Stephen's may have been the local school.  The other question is would boys and girls have received formal education at a school at this time.

Need some guidance and pointed in the right direction.

Kilkenny / Early photo or drawing of Dunkitt in County Kilkenny
« on: Monday 18 September 17 15:07 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone come across an early photograph or drawing of Dunkitt. I am looking ideally for how it looked in the time one of my ancestors lived and worked there. He was a gardener who may have been a gardener for a Doctor Mackessey who owned land in Dunkitt. My ancestor was William Lumley  born about 1783 died in 1864.

Waterford / Street Map of Waterford Circa 1900
« on: Monday 18 September 17 10:13 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have a street map of Waterford City from 1900 or know where I can access. Ideally I am looking for the area that is within say one or two miles of the quay.
