Hampshire & IOW Completed Lookup Requests / 1871 WHITE Family
« on: Monday 23 February 09 11:09 GMT (UK)  »
This family are resisting all my efforts to find them in the 1871 census.  I'd be very grateful if anyone else could have a look.

Fitzhughes Ale Store, 45 Bedford Place, Southampton.
All WHITE.
Albert J, Head, M, 38, Coal Merchant, b. Hants.
Matilda, Wife, M, 37, b. Lewisham, Kent.
Alice M, Dau, S, 16, b. Southampton.
Harry S, Son, 14, Labourer, b. Southampton.
Ernest, Son, 10, Scholar, b. Southampton.
Annie M, Dau, 8, Scholar, b. Southampton.
Frederick, Son, 5, Scholar, b. Southampton.

Sarah Rowe and her son, Thomas, are living with the family.  By the 1891 Thomas is listed as an adopted son of Albert.

The Lighter Side / Child's surname on birth certificates
« on: Tuesday 20 January 09 14:38 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have a birth certificate for a recent birth?  The most recent I have is for a birth over twenty years ago and on that the child’s forenames are listed and the forenames and surnames of the parents.  I always thought that it was just tradition for the child to be known by the father’s surname but didn’t think there was any legal obligation for this to be used rather than the mother’s.

One another website there is a thread running about mothers having their children’s birth certificate altered to give the child the mother’s surname instead of the father's.  Do birth certificates now ask for the surname that the child will be known by?

The Common Room / Recording relatives' stories
« on: Friday 21 November 08 22:40 GMT (UK)  »
I want to get some of the older generation's stories recorded but don't know what method is best.  I've got a tape recorder but I don't think it's going to give me very good recordings.  Are there any more modern systems that would give me better quality recordings?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / New photos
« on: Friday 19 October 07 23:42 BST (UK)  »
I've read the threads about storing old photos for posterity but what do folks do about current family pictures?  The archival sleeves aren't very pretty when you want to get out an album of photos and show family and friends.  Are there any albums that don't damage photos?  Is it best to print off two of the best photos and keep one in a safe archive and the other in one for showing?

What do you do?

The Common Room / Bridgit/Bessie?
« on: Sunday 08 April 07 11:08 BST (UK)  »
This has been prompted by a comment in Diski's thread -

"If the child's name is Bridget, but goes by the name of Bessie or Delia, etc."

I've never come across Bessie being used as diminutive for Bridget but I do have an Irish ancestor called Bessie and completely failed to find her as Elizabeth.  Should I be looking for a Bridget?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / WW2 photos
« on: Wednesday 28 February 07 22:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

I hope someone will be able to work the usual magic with these photos.

I have been in contact with the daughter of one of my father's army mates who died in Italy in WW2.  All her father's letters and photos have been lost and she only has one picture of her father.  My Dad has a couple of him, one in fairly good condition, the second rather battered.  It would be lovely to pass on good copies to her.

The second one seems to have some light damage so it may not be fixable completely but perhaps it could be improved a bit?

Many thanks

The Common Room / Two deaths - same GRO ref?
« on: Saturday 20 January 07 19:09 GMT (UK)  »
I have found two deaths - Joseph Ebenezer and Charles Ebenezer - with the same reference - Jun qr 1852, Tregaron  11b - 67.

I have found two brothers - Joseph b. 1847 and Charles b. 1850 - who don't appear in any censuses after 1851 so the deaths could be them but why would they have the same reference?

Essex / Where is Walter Belchamp?
« on: Monday 01 January 07 16:50 GMT (UK)  »
I have an ancestor who gives her place as birth as Walter Belchamp in Essex in the 1881 and 1891.  I can't find any reference to this place on google except for an ancient manuscript which mentions it.

She was living in Lexden, Colchester, at the time of the censuses - if that helps!

Does anyone know where this place is/was?

Thanks,
Monica

Census and Resource Discussion / Census: "Junr" mistranscribed as surname "June"
« on: Sunday 31 December 06 15:35 GMT (UK)  »
Is this where some of those missing ancestors are hiding?

It's a mistranscription that's new to me.

I found a family today where the father's name "John Bird, Junr" had been transcribed as "John Bird June".  The transcriber had interpreted the ditto marks for the surname to relate to "June" so all the rest of the family were listed as "Margaret June", "Ellen June", etc.

There are examples of this in most of the censuses.  Sometimes, as above, the surname is given as a middle name for the head of household and is missing for the rest of the family.  Sometimes the surname is given as a middle name for all the family members.  I was also surprised to see it applied to women where a widowed mother and her daughter had the same name.

Hope that helps someone find a missing relative or two.
