Armed Forces / Army Graves Abroad - not WW1 and WW2
« on: Sunday 30 July 06 23:53 BST (UK)  »
Following on from Shugh's topic about an army death in India in 1921 -

www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,172660.msg820865.html#msg820865 -

does anyone look after the graves of soldiers who died abroad?  They may have died from illnesses rather than on active service but they were sent "out there" by their country.  It's sad to think of their graves being neglected and lost.

Cardiganshire / 1891 census - same info in two places.
« on: Monday 01 May 06 16:13 BST (UK)  »
I’m confused about the 1891 census returns for Bettws Leiki in Cardiganshire, RG12/4563, folio 14, pp 1-9.  Pages 1 and 2 list only names, in family groups.  Pages 3 - 9 give house/farm names in addition but no other information.

I am researching the Ebenezer families in the area and found one family - Catherine, Catherine, Morgan, Catherine Anne, Thomas and Elizabeth M Hughes on RG12/4563, folio 19, p 11 - only to find exactly the same group of names appearing on page 2 of the Bettws Leiki returns.  It was too much of a co-incidence for there to be two families with exactly the same names in the same age order so I compared some others, only to find all the names on the Bettws returns repeated on the Blaenpanel ones.

Any ideas about why this is so?  Thanks for any ideas.

Occupation Interests / Collier/Miner
« on: Friday 28 April 06 16:48 BST (UK)  »
There's a family in the 1841 census in Wombridge, Shropshire where four of the family are described as "Collier" and one as a "Miner".

I've googled the "old occupations" sites without finding a distinction.  Any ideas?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Is it possible to improve this?
« on: Saturday 04 February 06 17:10 GMT (UK)  »
Is there any way to make my Dad and his beloved Molly - the horse who pulled his milk cart in pre-war London - any clearer?

I've only just been given the photo so I'm not responsible for the fingerprints!

Thanks for any help,
Monica

I’ve come to a (temporary) stop with the family searching so I thought I’d better get to grips with this photograph stuff.  What’s being done to photos on this site is inspiring and I want to learn how to do it myself.

Now, I’ve read my way through all the advice on here and followed up some really good links and I think I know what I’m about to do.  Would one of the resident experts just confirm for me that I’m right (or not!).  I’d hate to scan hundreds of photos only to find I should have done it differently.

I’ve got a range of photos from tiny 1930s b&w to recent colour ones.  I’m hoping to print some of the small ones at 6x4inch.

I’m planning to scan using 24 colour at 600dpi and save as tiff files to an archive which will be saved by more than one method for safety.  I’m selecting the whole photo to archive it in the original state even where I know I will want to crop it.

When I want to alter photos, I’ll copy them, alter them and save as jpgs to save space.  (Should I save really good improved photos as tiffs in the archive file?)

Is that the right approach?  Is there anything else that I should be doing that I don’t mention?

Thanks,
Monica

The Common Room / Salvation Army - marriages?
« on: Tuesday 27 December 05 23:25 GMT (UK)  »
I've just found out that the relatives I can't find a marriage for were involved with the Salvation Army in its early days in Birmingham.

If they had married at a Salvation Army church (is that what it's called?) would the details still have been sent to the GRO?

Thanks

The Common Room / Really stuck!!! JOHN FRANCIS SLADE marriage.
« on: Monday 12 December 05 14:09 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help me find a marriage between JOHN FRANCIS SLADE and MARY HAWKER?  I've searched every way I can think of with no luck.

John was born in Yeovil in 1851, married Ellen Mansell in 1871, then moved to Worcester before the 1881 census.  Ellen died in 1883.

By the 1891 census Mary is listed as John's wife.  (1891 - RG12/2327, folio 18, p 9.  1901 - RG13/2779, folio 39, p 22).  Their first child (of fifteen/sixteen) was born in 1885 which gives a very small range to find the marriage, assuming they did everything in the usual order.  Mary gives her place of birth as Worcester and birth year of 1861.  With this date of birth there would have been a ten year gap.  Might she have added a few years to look more respectable?  I have her surname from birth certificates.

I've searched far and wide in time and areas looking for a marriage but found nothing.  I also can't find Mary in any of the earlier censuses.  Any suggestions welcome.

Family stories say that John became quite a prominent figure in the gloving business in Worcester so I don't think he could have lived with Mary without marrying her - though it's not impossible.

Thanks

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Violet needs some help!
« on: Sunday 11 December 05 18:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

Could someone have a go at restoring Grandmother Violet to her former beauty?  It's the crease across her eyes that have put me off having a go.

Violet died aged 31 and this is the only photo we have of her.  I think it must have been taken when she became engaged - the left hand and the ring are held very prominently!

Thanks
Monica
