Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Colliery Foreman - can't make out what type
« on: Friday 09 February 18 16:09 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you in advance for any help that can be given.

I have attached an extract from the 1911 census and can see that it says colliery foreman above ground, however, I cannot work out what type of foreman it is. I would be grateful if someone has a second opinion please.

Regards,

Nic

Good morning and thank you as always for any help that can be given.

I confidently ordered the death certs of my great grandparents only to find that I may have made a mistake somewhere.

I have checked back through what I do know.  My grandparents are Kenneth William Patterson and Barbara Mary Nicholson married 9 December 1947.  On their marriage cert (attached) Barbara's father is shown as Ernest Nicholson, Army officer retired, of 50 Hull Road Withernsea.

On the 1939 register I have Barbara M Nicholson living with Ethel M Nicholson and Ernest Nicholson, army pensioner.  I have assumed that this is the correct Barbara living at Bellevue, Waxholme Road. She is 13 in 1939 and then 21, 8 years later when she marries so seems likely.

I have then ordered Ernest's birth and death certs based on the date given for his birth in the 1939 register.  Ernest's death cert (attached) shows him as a retired cabinet maker of Bellevue, Waxholme Road (same address as 1939).  In the 1911 census I have him as "Chair maker (Manf. upholsterer & cabinet maker)" and 1913 marriage cert as "chair maker" so it isn't a huge leap to see him as a cabinet maker on his death cert.  Also the addresses and dates match.  The witness on Ernest' death cert is his Son Stanley William Nicholson (baptism details attached)

My problem is with Ethel.  On the marriage cert her maiden name is Grant.  On the 1939 register her DoB is 14/03/1893.  I couldn't find a death cert based on this date but I ordered one (attached)based on 14/03/1894 (exactly 1 year difference), however this states that she was a widow of Ernest Nicholson (retired gas board worker) and that her address was 48 Kirkfield Road.

As gas board worker and cabinet maker seem too far apart and there is a year difference in the birth dates do I have the same person?  The different addresses on the death certs are only about a mile apart and only a few houses away from the informant Joan Kathleen Nicholson (daughter in law). I can't find any details as to who Joan married to become a Nicholson (it doesn't seem to be Stanley).

Any help identifying whether I have the correct Ethel May would be appreciated (I think that I do - it is just the cabinet maker vs gas board worker that is throwing me!), as would any help identifying who Joan Kathleen is.

Many thanks,

Nic

Good afternoon and thank you for any help that can be given.

I have attached an extract from my 4xgreat grandfather's merchant seaman record which describes some of his personal characteristics.  I would be grateful if someone could transcribe the complexion description please?

Thank you,

Nic

Good afternoon and thank you in advance for any help that can be given.

I have attached the 1818 transcript of the marriage between my 4xgreat grandparents, however, there is one highlighted word that I am unable to read where I would have expected to see "Bachelor".

I would be grateful if anyone could transcribe this for me please.

Thank you,

Nic

Devon / Is Yealm still a place?
« on: Tuesday 02 January 18 18:47 GMT (UK)  »
Good evening and thank you in advance for any help that can be given.

Under where born on an 1851 census I have Devon, Yealm; however, on looking on Google I can only find a river of this name rather than a place.  Could someone tell me more about this place name please or have I misread it?

Thank you,

Nic

Hi everyone and thank you in advance for any help that can be given!

My great grandfather is George William Patterson (23/04/1898 (Hull) - 01/11/1970 (Hull)) for whom I have his birth, marriage and death certificates.

His marriage certificate of 03/04/20 shows that he married Madge Francis White in the district of Patrington and that they were living together at 11 South Cliff Road, Withernsea. Her father on the certificate is William White, coastguard (deceased).

If I have the right person, I have her living with her grandparents in Sculcoates in 1901 (RG13/4489 Page 35) and in 1911 still with her grandparents at 11 South Cliff Road (i.e. where she was when she got married). On both census she is shown as born in Waxholme around 1887. Her grandfather is shown as born in Padstow, Cornwall.

In the 1939 register her date of birth is shown as 14/12/1886.  I have a birth certificate which I assumed was her as it is for Madge Frances White born on 14 December 1886 in Sandlemere, Waxholme but this is where it gets confusing!

On the birth cert the mother is shown as Emily Elizabeth White (a domestic servant).  There is no father on the certificate, however, as mentioned earlier a William White is down as her father on the marriage certificate to my great grandfather.

Firstly, do you think that I have the right birth cert (I think there is enough circumstantial evidence to support this)?
Secondly, do you think the person on the marriage cert is actually her grandfather rather than another William White?
Thirdly, what happened to Emily Elizabeth White?

Thank you for any clarity that may be given.

Regards,

Nic

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Address 1901 census Hull
« on: Wednesday 15 November 17 13:35 GMT (UK)  »
Good afternoon everyone and thank you in advance for any help that can be given.
In the 1901 census (RG13 4489 22 35) my great grandmother was living with her grandparents in Sculcoates, Hull.  The street address is No.33 Charlotte Street but it also seems to show that they are living in a Hall!

I have attached the extract and would be grateful if anyone could shed light on the name of the Hall (or indeed anything else to do with that address please).

Many thanks,

Nic

Good morning everyone,

Thank you in advance for any help that can be given.  I have been researching the brother of my wife's great grandfather, especially during his time in WW1.

George Whitfield Moulson died 6th January 1942 and was buried on 10th January 1942 in the parish of Hanging Heaton in Vault 455 N.G.  He was born on 8th December 1877.  He lived 69 Bywell Road which from Google Maps seems to be about a mile away.

If anyone lives near Hanging Heaton and has the time to visit the church I would be very grateful if a photo could be taken of George's grave please.  As we live 215 miles away in Cardiff, I know that this is a lot to ask, so really appreciate any kind help that can be given.

Thank you again,

Nic

World War One / 9th West Yorkshire Regiment - which company? Trench maps?
« on: Saturday 12 August 17 19:40 BST (UK)  »
Good evening and thank you for any help that can be given.

I am trying to work through the War diary of the 9th West Yorkshire Regiment (WO 95/1809/2) as the brother (George Whitfield Moulson Private 40917) of my wife's great grandfather served with them in WW1 after being transferred from 6th York & Lancaster .  As the battalion was split into 4 companies A, B, C, D my first hope for advice is how can I identify which Company he was in so that I can more accurately identify his movements.

Secondly, the diary mentions specific trenches that the battalion fought in, for example Q18 A 5.4. Maps 57D.  I would be grateful if anyone could help me identify exactly where this trench is based on the code given.

Many thanks in advance for any help that can be given.
