Armed Forces / Query about Military records at Kew
« on: Wednesday 13 July 22 17:58 BST (UK)  »
I have found a record on FindMyPast for a John Chambers who served as a gunner in the Royal Horse Artillery and was discharged in 1814. Parish of birth was Ardstraw, Co Tyrone.

The Archive Reference at Kew is WO 97 Box 1219 record no 40.

Is there likely to be any additional information in the NAS records at Kew, or will Box 1219 just contain the original of the on-line discharge certificate.

Any other avenues for obtaining information on this soldier’s time in the army?

Canada / Catherine O'Neill - Migration & marriage in Canada
« on: Wednesday 03 February 21 23:04 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for assistance with a marriage in Canada and arrival information in Canada.

Catherine O’Neill born 2nd March 1891 Co Antrim, Ireland went to Canada sometime between 1908 and 1932. She married John Burnett born c 1890, Glasgow, Scotland.  I don’t have a date for their marriage but they had a son Hugh William Cameron Burnett in Montreal 27.6.1932, so the marriage was likely before that and in Canada. (There may also have been children John & James. No dates known for them). Catherine died in Montreal on 24.12.1969 and as far as I know spent most of her life in Canada there.

Can anyone find Catherine’s arrival in Canada on passenger lists, and also her marriage in Canada (presumably in or near Montreal)?

Occupation Interests / Church of England & Ireland Ministers
« on: Saturday 09 January 21 22:12 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching a Church of Ireland & England Minister - the Rev James Thomas McLear (1768 – death not known). Information about his career from or other records would be very helpful.

He has some connection with the Church of Ireland parish of Ardstraw, in Co Tyrone, Northern Ireland. His son Thomas was born there, in the Rectory at Moyle Glebe in 1794, though Rev James himself doesn’t appear in the published list of Rectors of that parish. But his wife Mary b 1772 also died there in 1864 and so there must be some long established connection.

Crockfords Clerical Directory appears to only start c 1860.  Are there earlier records of Church of Ireland/England Ministers careers?

The McLear family generally were high achievers with several listed in Wikipedia and one was a distinguished astronomer who has a blue plaque in Newtownstewart, Co. Tyrone, but it’s Rev James I am particularly interested in at present. Where was he born, trained, where did he serve and where did he die?

Tyrone / Rev James Thomas McLear, Ardstraw

I am researching the Rev James Thomas McLear (1768 – not known), married to Mary Magrath (1772 – 1864).  He has some connection with the Church of Ireland parish of Ardstraw, in Co Tyrone. His son Thomas was born in the Rectory at Moyle Glebe, Ardstraw in 1794, though Rev James himself doesn’t appear in the published list of Rectors of that parish. Where was he born, educated and where did he serve as a Minister? What was his connection with Ardstraw since he doesn’t appear to have served there, and I don’t see any obvious connection with any of the incumbents via his wife.

Armed Forces / Assistance required re Wm Henry Wright - UK Army service c 1870s.
« on: Tuesday 25 July 17 16:47 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for a military record for William Henry WRIGHT (known as Henry) born 1856 Great Bentley, Essex. He is reported to have joined the Royal Inniskillings. He can be placed in Enniskillen in 1878 because he had a daughter born there.  By 1880 he was in Belfast working as a full time musician, and so had evidently left the army. So any military career must be c 1872 – c 1879. Not sure of his exact role in the army but he was a noted musician and so may perhaps have been in the band.

Looking for some assistance.

John Malcolm Gordon Smith was born in Belfast on 22.4.1913. Parents and siblings:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Banbridge_West_Urban/Newry_Road/206825/

He was still alive in 1953 when he was named as executor in his mother’s will. At that time he was living at Ardenlea, Clonevin Park, Lisburn, Co Antrim.

I can’t find any trace of him after 1953. Ideally I’d like to find his date of death and will. Any ideas?

Looking for some assistance:

William Harold Smith was born in Belfast c 1904. See:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Banbridge_West_Urban/Newry_Road/206825/

He was still alive in 1953 when he was named as executor in his mother’s will. At that time he was living at Ardkill, Killiney, Co Dublin. He was a company director, and I am fairly sure was married to Ruth Somers Beatty.  They had at least one son born 1937 (name withheld as he might well be alive).

I can’t find any trace of William after 1953. Ideally I’d like to find his date of death and will. Any ideas?

US Lookup Requests / Francis Grimshaw - East Hampton, NY.
« on: Thursday 08 October 15 16:35 BST (UK)  »
I am researching a Francis Grimshaw (born Manchester UK c 1806). He emigrated to the US in the 1820s and married a Mary Sherman (no further information). The couple had a son Francis jr born East Hampton, NY in 1833, whose subsequent life I know.

Francis and Mary presumably married near East Hampton c 1832 or earlier. However I cannot find their marriage. Can anyone help?

Also, I have searched for Francis & Mary in the US censuses but cannot find them. Can anyone assist? My only clue is that I see what looks to be Francis jr in the 1850 census working on someone else’s farm, and I wondered if perhaps both his parents were dead. But that’s just supposition.
