The Common Room / Re: What do you think?

Hi Martyn,

To be honest it's really only something you can guess about, but like Charlotte says why was he not on the birth cert if he was marrying the mother anyway? Maybe you should treat it like an adoption? put the man down as his step-father rather than father and then decide if you want to follow his line or not. My grandfather was illegitimate and his mother married when he was 4, I have put his stepfather's family in but only 2 generations.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Will Help

Hi,

Thanks for trying, I think he added the end bit after he had finished the letter and I'll have to admit defeat and say it is truly illegible! At least the will is readable:-)

Thanks again

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Royal Navy Questions-Completed
« on: Sunday 29 March 09 08:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have downloaded the service record of my ancestor who was in the Royal Navy for a large chunk of his life, for most of this time he was an able seaman, a second mate and a lead seaman. But there are 2 positions I don't know, the first is captain of main top and the second looks to me like bos mle. Does any one know what these positions were?

Thanks
Ange

Hi All,

Could anyone please help with this letter that was attached to a will I downloaded this morning from the National Archives, it is explaining to Ann Furmedge why her husbands will is invalid. I can read most of the beginning but I have no idea what the ending says, can anyone help?

Thanks

Northumberland / Re: Can anyone help me find Ralph?
« on: Wednesday 26 July 06 22:52 BST (UK)  »
Thank you so much for looking up Ralph & Janes marriage ;D

Thanks to Gladys1 I now know who Ralphs parents are and a whole lot more ;D she has given me information that takes me back 100 years  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Dorothy & Phillis were Ralph's sisters.
The only thing I can think of is that one of the other Heron family who baptised a child/children in South Shields was a relative of Ralph and they were visiting when John was born. Otherwise it doesn't make sense that they married in Newcastle, had their first child in S/S then went back and had their second child in Newcastle. ???

Janis,
Gladys's Ralph is my Ralph too, hello (very distant) cousin ;D
Ange ;D (feeling like I just won the (genealogical) lottery!!!!!!!!!!)
