Scotland / Search by address for Scottish Census?
« on: Saturday 07 August 10 10:53 BST (UK)  »
Is there anywhere where i can do a census search by address for a place in Scotland? They have that function on Find My Past for England asnd Wales but unless i am missing something don't have Scottish census.

I have also tried Scotlands People and Ancestry.

The Common Room / Using both sides of a grave headstone
« on: Saturday 07 August 10 09:54 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering about the practice of using both sides of a headstone. I have an ancester buried in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. On the headstone it reads:

'In memory of Ninian Halliday died Newfield Bank 18 July 1853............................'

It goes on to also mention his wife and 3 of their children. On the reverse is an engraving stating:

'Here lies Nineon Holliday tennant in Oldtoun died 7 Dec 1775 aged 95 years. Also Kateren Hunter his spouse died 1770 aged 76 years.'

Was it a common practice to use both sides of the headstone and what circumstances might this happen?

Can i assume that they are related? I have not found any paper records to link them but the Scottish naming pattern potentially fits.

Dumfriesshire / Re: Where is or was Oldtown/ Oldton/ Oldtoun
« on: Friday 06 August 10 19:16 BST (UK)  »
Actually i just realised i only gave half the details. The OPR's are of Moffat mid to late 1700's and as example say 'John Halliday in Oldtoun'.

Would this refer to a town/ village or a farm/ house? I am assuming the latter.

I'm not sure the Auldtoon on the old maps website would be the correct one as it is not in the parish of Moffat unless someone can tell me otherwise......please! ;)

Has anyone heard of Oldtown or a variation of this. I have it on several O.P.R records but can't find any other reference to it. It is defiantly Dumfries.

Thanks

Hi Onecoat

Philip and Cornelius are direct relations to me as i have found out through my research. I have not put much effort into this line yet but I have been reading your posts with interest and am looking forward to sitting down and extracting the info.

As most of your Miles posts are 4 to 5 years old you either have completed as much as possible or gave up. Anything you can send my way would be greatly appreciated  ;)

Where do Philip and Cornelius fit into your tree?

Karl

That's the girl. Thanks Lee and thanks again Pauline.

On Ancestry in 1901 her name has been transcribed as Heplizabah Holmer. It took alot of playing with wildcard names but thanks to you i am there. Now onto the next relative ;D

Thanks Pauline, that's the one.

Yeah it was Ancestry i couldn't find her on. As you can see i am new to this site so was not sure of the etiquette yet!

So as i have spent ages and couldn't find her lets see what you can do for 1901  ;)
