US Lookup Requests / Re: James Coventry STENHOUSE
« on: Friday 01 April 11 23:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Thanks to all you guys for helping me out with this - now I can sleep at night knowing what happened to him!
I got in touch with the manageress at Eastlawn Cemetery (via the Tyrone Historical Society) and the next day had received a picture of James' and Margaret's headstone.
Incredible.

US Lookup Requests / James Coventry STENHOUSE
« on: Tuesday 22 March 11 23:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

Can anyone help me with one of my more elusive ancestors - James Coventry  Stenhouse?
James was born on 24th March 1883 in Burntisland, Fife, Scotland.
His parents (my GG Grandparents) were David Stenhouse (1841-1888) and Elizabeth Coventry (1845-1910).

James appears on the 1891 Census for Birkenhead, England at age 7, but unlike his many brothers and sisters, doesn't appear on any 1901 English Census. He seems to vanish.

I found a reference on familysearch.org to 'Jas C Stenhouse' in the 1910 US Census as a resident of Brooklyn Ward 22, Kings, New York and shows his immigration year as 1898.
His birthplace, and that of his parents, is confirmed as Scotland (which I’m sure will apply to thousands!)
His wife is Margaret (no maiden name), and she was born in New York to Canadian parents in about 1882.
His children are listed as James M (born c1902), Devena E (born c1905) and Margaret M (born c1907).

What makes me think it might be him is that he had two older sisters (maybe his favourites) called Davina and Margaret McBeath.

It’s a bit of a long shot but….if you are a descendant of James Coventry Stenhouse, and the above information appears to stack up, then I’d love to hear from you!

Fife / Re: Stenhouse burials in Aberdour, Fife

Hi Lynnc
Thanks so much your reply, and a very useful tip.
I'm hoping to go up to Aberdour in the summer, maybe to coincide with their festival, and I'll be paying a visit to the PO.

Fife / Stenhouse burials in Aberdour, Fife
« on: Monday 08 November 10 20:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
I'm looking for burial records for both Aberdour Cemetery and St Fillans Church in order to track down the graves of the following people:

David Stenhouse died 6th April 1888 aged 79
William Coventry Stenhouse died 4th June 1888 aged 3 months
Andrew Stenhouse died 4th December 1891 aged 77
Elizabeth Ross Stenhouse died 11th April 1895 aged 79
Andrew Stenhouse died 15th February 1913 aged 60

All were residents of Aberdour.

I've spoken to the Burials Superintendent (Dunfermline), Fife Council and New Register House (Edinburgh) who were all sympathetic, but unfortunately couldn't help.
It would appear that the Burials Superintendent's records only start in 1930.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Re: Tranmere, Birkenhead, Liverpool Burial Lookup

Hi myone

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
I've spoken to the Records Office at Landican (they hold the records for all Wirral's municipal cemeteries) but they have no record for either David or Ann.
I also checked the microfiche at Birkenhead library for Ann but with no success, I'm afraid.
I think they must be buried in a churchyard or perhaps Liverpool?

Hi myone

I've been to Birkenhead library today and looked at the microfiche burial records.
I can tell you that he doesn't appear to be buried in Flaybrick (the obvious one), Bebington (next obvious) or Wallasey cemeteries.
These three are all pretty large, and to be on the safe side, I checked Church of England, Roman Catholic and Non-Conformist for all three.
Makes me think he may have been buried in a church yard rather than a municipical cemetery.
Last throw of the dice - I'll contact the Council records people and see if they can help (they can be pretty slow).
Can you give me the exact date of birth for wife Ann - maybe I could try it from that angle, assuming they're buried together.

Oops - forgot to ask - do you happen to know the religion?
The records are split by denomination; Church of England, Roman Catholic, Non-Comformist.
No problem if you don't know, though.

Hi myone

Any success?
I'd guess that Flaybrick Cemetery is the most likely.
As I live in the area I could check the burial records for Flaybrick, maybe find out the records of who else is buried in the plot, maybe even find the grave (though Flaybrick is pretty large).
Let me know if you'd like help.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Re: Help pls Thelwells in Birkenhead in 1911 Census
« on: Tuesday 26 October 10 23:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi Keith
I have returned with an answer but probably not the one you were hoping for.

In 1900, the resident was Joseph Jones.
From 1901 to 1903, the resident was Edward Angus.
No-one was listed for 1904.
From 1905 to 1915, Joseph Jones (again, presumably) was at this address.
The Birkenhead Electoral Roll has three divisions for each ward; the 'main' list, a lodgers list and a service list (and I assume this is standard across the country).
I made sure I checked all three divisions but no mention of the Thelwells I'm afraid.
I'm sure there's only one Cathcart Street but just to confirm, the one I checked was in Birkenhead Grange Ward.
'Grange' should be visible on the Enumerators List on the census.

I've come across this problem before when researching my own family - maybe for whatever reason he wasn't eligible to vote, or chose not to be eligble?
Women didn't get to vote until 1918, and then only when over 30 years old.
I guess that Joseph Jones isn't on the Census for the address?
Let me know if I can do anything else.
