Armed Forces / Re: Uniform and Time Scale Info Wanted

Thank you both very much, I feel now, that I have moved a lot closer to finding out what eventually happened to him.  I have still had no luck in finding his death, according to my late Dad he is supposed to have abandoned the family at some point and my Grandad removed the "s" off "Balls" making our name Ball.  I've found his wife's death but not his.

Thanks again, great stuff!

Cheers David

Armed Forces / Uniform and Time Scale Info Wanted
« on: Wednesday 27 October 10 20:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I hope I'm posting this in the right area.  I'm after some info on the pictures below.  They are of my G Grandfather, Edgar Samuel Balls, b1876 in Gt Yarmouth.  He is listed on the 1901 census as being in barracks in Colchester, it states that he is a private in the Infantry Millitia.  I have other evidence from 1906 in which he states he is in the Norfolk Artillery Millitia and took part in the South Africa Campaign (the second Boer War I presume) and was awarded the South African Campaign medal.

In the photo's he is with his wife and family, one of which is my Grandfather.  He was born in 1903, so I think the photo must have been taken around the outbreak of the First World War judging by the Union flags etc.

What I'd like to know is:
What is the date of this type of uniform?
What is the narrow multi coloured strip above his breast pocket and what does it denote?
Is or was there a regiment called the Norfolk Artillery Millitia?
Did they take part in the second Boer War?
The photo is on a post card, would it be a tintype photo?

Thanks in advance
David

Thanks anyway Meles.  The second Boer war was over in 1902 and the photo I posted must have been taken in about 1913 or 14, judging by the age of the kids, of which one is my grandad.  Thanks for the link.

Hi, I've just joined this site after stumbling across it whilst browsing my "tree".  My family on my dad's side are the "Balls" from the Gt Yarmouth area.  I myself was born in Sheffield, my surname is Ball, as for some reason my grandfather dropped the "s" from Balls.  I have become obsessed with my g/grandfather, Edgar Samuel Balls, born at 4 Tower Cottages, Garden Lane, Gt Yarmouth in 1876.  I have found evidence of him in all the cencus' up to 1901 and his marriage in 1900, to Florence Hough from Sheffield.  I think he joined the Norfolk Artillery Militia in c. 1900 as he is listed as "Samuel Balls" in barracks at Colchester in the 1901 census.  He was also involved in the bribery allegations in the 1906 general election.  He and some others taking a bribe to vote for a particular Gt Yarmouth candidate, I have a transcript of his statement.  There is no sign of him in the 1911 census, although his wife and children are listed as living at No. 4, Row 119, Gt Yarmouth.  From then on I can't find any sign of Edgar, no death records, nothing.  My late dad told me he is supposed to have left Florence at some point, maybe this explains the dropping of the "s" by my grandad.  Sorry to drone on, but any help would be much appreciated.

Edgar Samuel and family, my grandad, Edgar is stood to the right.

Cheers David
