thanks everyone I had heard he was married years before ? but his name is so common never did find it plus he was a liar too ,I know he used an alias for some time, couldn't even get his army records as they hadn't heard of him ?

I feel your pain! I have a Thomas reeves b.1850 who almost certainly was not born Thomas reeves, his marriage and first child aren't registered either. I also have a grandfather who was kicked out the army for lying that he'd been convicted of petty larceny in WW1, then re-enlisted under a different name - so I would have to go through every man's records in Croydon hoping a) it's there and b) I can identify him from next of kin/tattoos etc.

So inconsiderate of these people - didn't they know we'd want to research them? *tuts* :p

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: Ancestry - Your account has been blocked
« on: Friday 04 May 12 12:25 BST (UK)  »
If people pay monthly the details are available on your accounts page - which are easily unblocked by hackers! These days sites have plenty of security though thankfully :p

Monthly payment to Ancestry is never a good idea.  Just compare the prices against annual.  Even if you pay it on a credit card at 19% interest, it's still cheaper annually  8)

I can't afford the lump sum - as with most things I have to pay monthly and then end up paying a bit more, but, cest la vie.

Thanks so much Doddie and Kris47
It turned out to be a little more complicated than we expected, but at least I now know that John Cameron was indeed his father and possibly why he didn't stick around!

One Name Studies: T to Z / Van der Kiste Vanderkiste (Vanderhiste)
« on: Friday 04 May 12 12:22 BST (UK)  »
This is a post for Vanderkiste, sometimes (and probably originally) Van der Kiste, and often mistranscribed as VanderHiste.

It mean 'Of the Box' or possibly more accurately - 'cist' - like the grave..!

I have the family in London, and later Croydon - I also know a branch of excisemen in the family moved to Ireland (whether it was because they were excisemen and were posted there I am unsure).
The earliest I have found seem to have been priests and apothecaries, but if anyone is aware of when the first immigrants from The Netherlands to England then I would be very glad to hear from you!

Just for good measure the parents marriage - note the wife's residence is given as 'sojourner' - brilliant! :)

Hello, just a quick note - you may want to re-word your 'request' for help, as I had a post moved from here just for saying I had traced my relatives back to a certain place to c.1750 but was wondering if anyone had traced theirs elsewhere... might be worth a quick edit :)

I had a look at the shipping news for the Prince regent, I haven't found it going to Australia, but I have found it going between Hull, Quebec, Portsmouth anf Lisbon in nearly every month except April - May and September, so it was probably one of these three months :)

Have you tried the Cornwall OPC?
I think this is Richard's birth here: http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/baptisms/index.php?year_from=1820&year_to=1830&parish=&forename1=richard&surname1=tink&forename2=forename&forename3=forename&t=baptisms&bf=Search

Lewannick is 3 miles from south Petherwin.
I would then search for the marriage of his parents and work your way back :)

I hope I've helped! Tink is such a cute surname, I have one in my tree I think but it's much later and further south...

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: DNA testing - genetic genealogy
« on: Thursday 03 May 12 17:13 BST (UK)  »
Oh that's brilliant thanks! I got an info pack from the Oxford one and thought they would have all aspects covered so it's great to know I can do this! Thanks for loaning me your number too, I'll go have a look. I might see if any of his brothers/sisters are still alive (we have a very large family - not particularly close..) so might be able to get a 50% reading of great granny somewhere! :p
thanks again

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: DNA testing - genetic genealogy
« on: Thursday 03 May 12 16:26 BST (UK)  »
Would just like to add my take  - although I personally want to do it to see whether my grandfathers line was from the eastern mediterranean/middle east (we aren't sure where exactly, just rumours) but can't due to their being no known direct male ancestors to us (it was through his mother the connection was supposed to be)...

My boyfriend's family did a DNA test between American, Barbadian and English members of the family, mostly to see if the American branch was connected to the 'nobility' (My boyfriend is next in line for a baronetcy) BUT also to see if rumours in the 1600's that one of the son's was actually not the Baronet's were true... and they were! The baronetcy diverted back to the direct line in the end anyway, but it was interesting for them to find out that  (at least) one of the Baronet's in the line was actually a ward/adopted son/foisted on him by an errant wife.

So I suppose it depends on what you're hoping to find. :)

Armed Forces / Re: 1851 Census - GOODWIN -1st Battalion Grenadier Guards
« on: Thursday 19 April 12 18:31 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I have a similar situation - got a marriage at the church in Trafalgar sq. late 1850 with John Hunt living in St george's Barracks, then 6 months later his wife gives birth to my gg grandfather and lists him as '1 battalion grenadier guards' - but they never live together again!
Did you ever find out where they were in 1851?
After reading so many newspaper reports about bigamist/deserting husbands from the army though I'm starting to wonder whether he ever intended to come back! Poor Sarah Ann his wife is a Charwoman and has to put my gg grandfather with family members! I have another possible daughter for her though so hopefully it may give his whereabouts for that, but it's in 1855 which helps even less for 51 and 61!
