Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Mystery re 1891 census PARKER
« on: Monday 11 July 05 21:10 BST (UK)  »
I would really appreciate anyone's suggestions and input!

This is my PARKER family:

Henry PARKER, born about 1860 in Chatham, Kent, brickmaker
Adelaide (BEAUMONT) PARKER, born 1861 in Gillingham, Kent
Rose PARKER, born about 1880 in Chatham, Kent
Amelia PARKER, born 15 August 1881 in Gillingham, Kent

They were listed in the 1881 census just before Amelia was born.

But, a couple of years ago when I had access to a census service, I couldn't find them as a family unit in 1891.

I don't know when or where Henry and Adelaide PARKER died.  I couldn't find a death record for an Adelaide PARKER between 1881-1891 on Free BMD.

Family lore states that Amelia had a brother who died during the First World War and that her sister, Rose, died at 16 of tuberculosis.  Amelia's nickname was "Milly" or "Millie".

In the 1891 census, I found:

District 8, Dean Prior, Devon
19 Bakers Cottages?
Living in the household of Mary LOCK, widow, 60:

Rose PARKER, Lodger, 11, scholar, born Chatham, Kent
Minnie PARKER, Lodger, 9, scholar, born Chatham, Kent

And:

Her Majesty's Prison
East Maidstone, Maidstone, Kent
Adelaide PARKER, prisoner, 27, married, tailoress, born Chatham, Kent

Could anyone advise me on how I might determine if these are my family members?

Thank you!
Josephine

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / 1891 Census William Thomas GEORGE
« on: Monday 04 April 05 00:08 BST (UK)  »
May I request a look-up for the following GEORGE family in the 1891 census?  It's a bit confusing, to say the least, so please bear with me.

William Thomas GEORGE & wife Sarah GEORGE

or Widow Sarah GEORGE

Children should include a son named Henry GEORGE, born 24 August 1879.

-------------------------------

Edited to say:

William Thomas GEORGE might have died in 1883.  If so, Sarah GEORGE would have been a widow in the 1891 census.

I've just come across a bad photocopy of a funeral card that says:

In Memory Of
Mr. William GEORGE
Who died on the 2 April 1883 [the date is hard to read; the two middle digits are weird]
Aged 34 years
Interred at M end O Cemetery [I don't know if this might be Mile End?]
No of Grave 46 P 5 8 aprel [April?]
J. Dupen, Undertaker, opposite St. Paul's [?] Church, Virginia Row, Bethnal Green

Free BMD:
Deaths Jun 1883
George, William, 35, Bethnal Green, 1c, 135

I don't know if this is my g-g-grandfather, William Thomas GEORGE.
-------------------------------

I believe this is my GEORGE family in London in the 1881 census:

12 Thomas St., London, Middlesex

William GEORGE, Head, 38, born Bishopsgate, Middlesex, Poultry Porter
Sarah GEORGE, Wife, 36, born Whitechapel, Middlesex
Annie GEORGE, Daur, 7, born Whitechapel, Middlesex, Scholar
Jane GEORGE, Daur, 4, born Whitechapel, Middlesex
Henry GEORGE, Son, 1, born Whitechapel, Middlesex

Even though the 1881 census lists their birthplace as Whitechapel, I believe the children could have been born in Bethnal Green.  At least, my g-grandfather was.

My great-grandfather's birth record says:

Henry GEORGE
Born:  24 August 1879, 34 Lisbon Street, Bethnal Green
Father:  William Thomas GEORGE; Occupation:  Porter
Mother:  Sarah GEORGE formerly POPE
[The father's occupation seems to match the 1881 census record.]

It gets confusing because there was also a Henry James GEORGE born in Bethnal Green in 1879.

Births Dec 1879 (Free BMD)
GEORGE, Henry, Bethnal Green, 1c, 210  [My g-grandfather?]

Births Jun 1879  (Free BMD)
GEORGE, Henry James, Bethnal Green, 1c, 272 [Not my g-grandfather.]

Marriages Jun 1868 (Free BMD)
GEORGE, William Thomas, Bethnal Green, 1c, 582
POPE, Sarah, Bethnal Green, 1c, 582
[My g-g-grandparents.  I don't know where they were living in 1871.]

These seem to correspond with the daughters in the 1881 census:

Births Sep 1872 (Free BMD)
GEORGE, Annie   , Bethnal Green, 1c, 277

Births Sep 1877 (Free BMD)
GEORGE, Jane Sarah, Bethnal Green, 1c, 221

This is the wrong family in the 1881 census:

33 Charlotte St., London, Middlesex

William GEORGE, Head, 31, born B Green, Middlesex, Brush Polisher
Matilda GEORGE, Wife, 34, born B Green, Middlesex
Matilda GEORGE, Daur, 8, born Shoreditch, Middlesex, Scholar
Elizabeth GEORGE, Daur, 6, born Shoreditch, Middlesex, Scholar
William GEORGE, Son, 4, born Shoreditch, Middlesex, Scholar
Henry J. GEORGE, Son, 2, born B Green, Middlesex, England

This death record might be my g-g-grandfather's, although the age is off a bit from the 1881 census:

Deaths Dec 1903 (Free BMD)
GEORGE, William Thomas, 54, Shoreditch, 1c, 36a

My g-grandparents:

Marriages Dec 1901 (Free BMD)
GEORGE, Henry, Bethnal G., 1c, 348
PARKER, Amelia, Bethnal G., 1c, 348

Amelia (PARKER) and Henry GEORGE moved to Canada by 1914.

Thank you for any help or information you might be able to give me!

Cheshire Completed Lookup Requests / 1891 Census Andrew CHRISTY / CHRISTIE
« on: Friday 01 April 05 00:26 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

If it's not too much trouble, may I request another look-up, please?

I'd like to see Andrew CHRISTY (born 1844, Bolton, Lancashire) and family in the 1891 census.  They would probably be in West Kirby.

This is the CHRISTY family in the 1901 census:

Hoylake-cum-West Kirby, 60 Birkett Rd., Wirral, Cheshire

Andrew CHRISTY, 56, shoemaker, bootm, employer, born Lancs. Bolton
Georgina CHRISTY [nee SALISBURY], 40, born Ches. Birkenhead
Arthur CHRISTY, son, 17, bootm., employee, born Ches. West Kirby
William CHRISTY, son, 16, plumber, born Ches. West Kirby
Elizabeth CHRISTY, daughter, 15, shop assistant (stationers), born Ches. West Kirby
Mary CHRISTY, daughter, 13, born Ches. West Kirby
George CHRISTY, son, 11, born Ches. West Kirby
Thomas CHRISTY, son, 9, born Ches. West Kirby
Anne CHRISTY, daughter, 8, born Ches. West Kirby
Malinda [should be Linda] CHRISTY, daughter, 5, born Ches. West Kirby
Florence CHRISTY, daughter, 3, born Ches. West Kirby
Ada CHRISTY, daughter, 1, born Ches. West Kirby

[They might have had twins born some time after the 1901 census.]

This is the CHRISTY family in the 1881 census:

36 Bury Old Road
Tonge With Haulgh, Lancashire

Andrew CHRISTY, W[idower], 36, born Bolton, Lancashire, Boot & Shoe Maker
Robert CHRISTY, Son, 8, born Seacombe, Cheshire, Scholar
Fred. CHRISTY, Son, 5, born Seacombe, Cheshire, Scholar

Family lore has it that Andrew CHRISTY was married three times and had 17 children.  (I have Georgina SALISBURY's maiden name from their daughter, Linda CHRISTY's, birth certificate.)  A family member thinks that Andrew CHRISTY's cobbler shop was preserved as a historical building but we haven't been able to confirm this.

Linda CHRISTY married William Francis HOLLAND in Cheshire in 1922 and they later came to Canada.  They were my husband's grandparents.  Linda's sister, Florence ("Flo"), moved to Australia.  Some of their siblings might have gone to the United States.

Thank you for any help or information you might be able to give us!

Regards,
Josephine

Cheshire Completed Lookup Requests / 1861 Census Abel HOLLAND
« on: Tuesday 29 March 05 04:11 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Would someone please look up this HOLLAND family in the 1861 census?

They were probably living in Gawsworth, Cheshire.

Abel HOLLAND, born about 1793 in Gawsworth
Wife Hannah, born about 1804 in North Rode

They were living in Gawsworth in the 1871 census.  Their son, Francis HOLLAND, born about 1843 in Gawsworth, and his wife and three children were living with Abel and Hannah.  I don't know the names of any other children of Abel and Hannah HOLLAND.

Thank you for any help you might be able to give me.
