Hi, All:

A while ago, I meant to unsubscribe from email alerts on one particular thread, but accidentally clicked on the option to stop all emails from Rootschat forever, and now I can't figure out how to change it back!

I've tried reading the 'How to Use Rootschat' forum but none of the suggestions I've seen have worked.

I know I can check the title bar at the top of this page for Hi Josephine! [Unread Posts] [New Replies] but I'd rather get email alerts.

In Rootschat.com >> Profile of Josephine >> Email Notifications, I have:
- checked the box for "Receive forum newsletters, announcements and important notifications by email"
- checked the box for "Turn email notification on when you post or reply to a topic"
- "For topics and boards I've requested email notifications on, notify me" = "Instantly - but only for the first unread reply"
- "For topics and boards I've requested email notification on, notify me of" = "Replies and moderation"
- and saved/updated the changes (on more than one occasion)

At the bottom of that page, it says:
"Current Board Email Notifications
You aren't receiving email notifications on any boards right now.
To request email notifications from a specific board, click the 'notify' button in the index of that board."

But when I look at a thread that I've posted on (for example, this one: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=749932.0), I don't see a "notify" button at the top. It only says: REPLY; UNNOTIFY; MARK UNREAD and PRINT.

Help! What should I do?

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me!

Best regards,
Josephine

Canada / Rootschat Mentioned in Toronto Star Article re. Home Children Graves
« on: Saturday 27 February 16 19:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, All:

In case you haven't seen it, Rootschat is mentioned in one of the pop-up photos boxes in this story: http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2016/02/27/dozens-of-british-home-children-lie-forgotten-in-etobicoke-cemetery.html .

The box title is "Repairing broken cords" and the cutline under the photo starts out: "Wilson stumbled on his long-lost family through a thread more than three years old on Rootschat, an online genealogy forum."

Best regards,
Josephine

The Common Room / Infidel?
« on: Wednesday 13 January 16 01:06 GMT (UK)  »
I was looking at the 1861 census of Canada (specifically North Dumfries, Waterloo, Canada West) in search of distant relatives when I came across the word "Infidel" in the Religion column. It's there for the families of James Brown and Thomas Cleghorn.

Has anyone else ever come across this designation?

I'm certain it says Infidel. I've included the location column to the right so you can see the backwards f in N. Dumfries for comparison. It's listed again in the tally at the bottom of the column.

Dumfriesshire / Lived in Milntown, buried in ??? Mystery now solved
« on: Monday 14 December 15 21:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, All:

If a family lived in Milntown, which cemetery(ies) might they have been buried in? (I've tried but can't figure it out myself through online searches.)

Thank you,

The Common Room / Sharing the less-than-glorious facts about ancestors
« on: Sunday 05 July 15 19:44 BST (UK)  »
I've accepted that I come from a long line of 'black sheep' and therefore don't mind discovering that 2nd, 3rd or 4th great-grandparents did prison time; on the contrary, I am fascinated and want to learn everything I can about the circumstances of their lives and crimes, etc.

Members of my close family tend to react the same way when I share the info with them. It was 100 or more years ago and we don't feel that it reflects badly on us as individuals to have ancestors who were a far cry from criminal masterminds.

Not everyone feels that way, however, and I'm wondering how Rootschatters (or your relatives) have reacted to such news. Even if it was a century or more ago, are there some things you would rather not know about your ancestors?

Best regards,
Josephine

The Common Room / "A Coulthard!" by Alfred J. Coulthard - Look-up Request, Please
« on: Thursday 02 July 15 17:53 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Does anyone have a copy of Alfred J. Coulthard's book, A Coulthard! The History of a Surname and, if so, would you be willing to do a look-up for me?

I'd like to know if the book contains any info on any Coulthards in Roxburghshire, Scotland; particularly in Roberton and Hawick.

Thank you,
Josephine

The Common Room / Maidstone Prison circa 1891 - advice needed, please
« on: Sunday 30 November 14 01:43 GMT (UK)  »
A woman with my g-g-grandmother's name, approximate age and birthplace is listed in Maidstone Prison in the 1891 census. I have been unable to rule her in or out as my g-g-grandmother.

I just went through the Criminal Registers on Ancestry from 1881-1892, page by page, for Kent County, and didn't find any mention of the woman in question. (She doesn't show up anywhere in England in various searches of the index; that's why I browsed the actual images for Kent. I started in 1881 because I have her -- not in prison -- in the 1881 census.)

Where does this leave me and what does this tell me? If she's not listed in those records, is she listed anywhere else? I had high hopes of finding her in this record set and then using that information to somehow obtain more detailed court records about her crime and punishment.

I'd appreciate any advice anyone can give me on where and how I might be able to find information about this particular prisoner/case. (I live in Canada.)

Thank you,
Josephine

I was searching for a death record (on one of the for-pay sites) when I came across an entry for someone named Eight Mouths Fortus Cleary.

Naturally, I was intrigued, so I viewed the original record which, tragically, was for an "eight month foetus," stillborn, with the surname Cleary. It's a good thing the parents aren't alive to see this.  :o

This is the most ridiculous error I've ever seen.

I just tried to view images from the Strood, Kent baptism register on the LDS site and I got a box that says:

"This image is available: - When using the site at a family history center. - To signed-in members of supporting organizations."

Does anyone know why some of the records are now restricted? If they're online, why aren't they available to everyone?

According to this page, these Anglican Church records are available online only to Mormons:
https://www.familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/England,_Kent,_Parish_Registers_and_Bishop%27s_Transcripts_%28FamilySearch_Historical_Records%29

"Whenever possible, FamilySearch makes images available for all users. However, ultimate rights to view images on our website are granted by the record custodians. The England, Kent, Parish Registers and Bishop's Transcripts collection is available to the Family History Library, FamilySearch Centers, and to members of the supporting organization, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The images can be viewed at a FamilySearch Center near you."

That doesn't sound right and it completely contradicts something stated higher up on the page:

"These projects are part of an agreement with the Centre for Kentish to digitize and publish our microfilm holdings. The images have all been scanned and delivered. We will be creating waypoint data with the help of the archive, we will publish images for FamilySearch Members and deliver the data to the archive as they are implementing the 'Reading Room Solution'."

Am I reading this wrong? When I signed up for the Family Search website, should I have lied and said I was a Mormon? Would that have allowed me to see the church records of my Anglican family members?

Or is it because they haven't finished the posthumous baptisms of my already-Christian ancestors who were properly baptized by the Anglican church according to the wishes of their parents?
