Hi Janet B

Thank you for mention of these sites. I have not looked at them yet because I need to know the following;

Do you have to subscribe to them to get the information? The reason I ask is because I am not in a finacial position to start subscribing to a number of sites. I am also very wary of generating more SPAM messages in my email box. I have enough of them already.

If I do have to subscribe to any sites, which are the most cost effective?

How expensive exactly.

I tried the website you suggested but it tells me that this website no longer exists.

If you can suggest anywhere else I may be able to get the information I will be very grateful.

Janet

I am sorry but I do not have access to the 1841 census for this area. I will have to leave this one to Skippy to try and help you.

If someone has access to the 1841 census could they please look up James Dawson & wife Martha.

James was born Heptonstall Stansfield 29/03/1785 and married Martha at Heptonstall 1805. They had a daughter Alice who married in 1829. I am afraid I have no other information.

Thanks for your help.

The Common Room / Re:Finding adoption details
« on: Tuesday 06 April 04 15:12 BST (UK)  »
Adoptions that took place before 1926 were not legalised and were usually arranged privately through a solicitor or the family doctor. No official documents were required so it can be virtually impossible to trace natural parents of adoptees.

I have come up against this problem myself when I discovered that my father who was born in 1923 was adopted and although I have his birth certificate I have been unable to find any record of the adoption.

Is there any relative still living that may be able to help?
