One Name Studies: N to S / Sabey
« on: Monday 27 November 17 14:38 GMT (UK)  »
I have recently registered the surname Sabey with the Guild of One-Name Studies. I have also started a Sabey website and a Y-DNA project with FTDNA.com.  My aim is to bring together from around the world, all possible data relating to those who have held the unusual surname Sabey and its variants, and share it with those who are also researching or have any interest in the name. Consideration will be given to the puzzle of its origin and to find links between the branches through the Y-DNA project.  Please be in touch if you have any relevant photos, stories or information you would like included on the website.

Bedfordshire Lookup Requests / Re: Peter Sabey of Roxton
« on: Tuesday 11 July 17 17:29 BST (UK)  »
Francis Sabey was baptised as an adult in 1790, at the same time as he married. The vicar may have insisted on it as he was under target that year, and he'd not have got his performance related bonus if he missed his target. He was said to be aged about 30. If he'd have been asked his age surely he'd have said 30 or 27 or whatever. "About 30" sounds like the vicar's guesstimate.
On burial his age was given as 67, implying a birth in 1766. Again though, the age is someone else's idea, so may be inaccurate
I agree the 'age about thirty years' stated on Francis Sabey's baptism on 15 Nov 1790 is guesswork, I suspect the vicar told him he wouldn't get married on that date unless he was baptised & the vicar also knowing he was the bastard son of Francis Elms & Mary Saby born just after May 1767. Also with both parents being dead Francis Elms in 1780 & Mary Saby in 1774, plus step mother perhaps Mary ne Hartop buried 1776 who was about to verify his age. If you take his age of 67 at burial on 15 Nov 1790 you get 1766 which tallies near enough to his birth. Who would have given that age at that time? if it was widow Charlotte, would she had said "well he must be as old as I am because we grew up together"  While you feel might be inaccurate, compare this with burial at age 76 on 2 Apr 1843 of his widow Charlotte making her born 1767 which does tally with her birth/baptism, daughter of Rubythan & Eliabeth White.

My conclusion is that Francis Sabey is bastard son of Francis Elms & Mary Saby - but who can prove it, that's another matter.

I think I can help prove it, or disprove it.  My nephew is a direct descendant of Thomas Sabey (Bolnhurst 1800-1852) in the male line.  If Francis Sabey is Thomas's father (right place, right time, see other forum posts which discuss this) and Francis Elms is Francis's father, then my nephew's Y-DNA will be Elms, not Sabey.  It has been tested and I just need a male Sabey to compare it with, or an Elms.  So if you know of anyone who would be a suitable candidate to test, please let me know.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Sabey, Saby, Sabin surname Y-DNA Project
« on: Thursday 08 June 17 07:41 BST (UK)  »
Thanks Robert for pointing out the bigger picture, I hadn't thought of that.  At present I prefer to keep them private, project only and until I have more experience of how the system works.  The Guild of One-Name Studies is supporting me and will ask their advice too.

I don't anticipate getting many members as Sabey is a very unusual name so I appreciate the tip on the projects that have Sabin members, many thanks.

Kind regards, Jane

Thanks for pointing that out, I thought they already were private!  Now changed, I hope!

Bedfordshire / Re: Thurleigh Parish Records
« on: Wednesday 07 June 17 10:57 BST (UK)  »
I know this is an old post, but I have only just discovered it while researching my family name and anyway the facts should never change!  I read with much interest (over a few days!) as my late father Raymond Francis Sabey was a direct descendant in the male line of Thomas Sabey born 1800 Bolnhurst and therefore may also be descended from Francis. Recently I registered the surname with the Guild of One-Name Studies and began a Y-DNA project with FTDNA in order to research common heritage between family trees and test the suggestion that the surname derives from the Sabines.  As Y-DNA follows male surnames, then I may also discover if the theory that Francis is Thomas's father is correct or not and if Francis Elms is his father.  I have a Sabey relative who is also directly descended from Thomas in the male line and I am waiting for his Y-DNA results so if I can find any other male holders of the surname Sabey (especially if they are directly descended from Samuel) with Y-DNA profiles to join the project then we are on the way to finding the skeleton in the cupboard, .....or not!  Please be in touch if you can help me rattle this particular set of old bones and perhaps clear up an ancient mystery.

But anyway, if you are a male Sabey from any global branch of the name or its variants and have had your Y-DNA tested please consider joining the Project as every holder of each spelling will form a vital part of the study.  If you are thinking of taking a Y-DNA test (or you are a female who could persuade Mr. Sabey to!) contact us at the Guild of One-name Studies as we offer a discounted FTDNA testing kit.

Many thanks.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Sabey, Saby, Sabin surname Y-DNA Project
« on: Wednesday 07 June 17 10:01 BST (UK)  »
A global DNA project for the name Sabey and all variants has been set up with Family Tree DNA.  I am aiming to determine common heritage between family trees and test the theory that the surname is a derivation of Sabine or Sabin.

I am also researching the surname and have registered Sabey with the Guild of One-Name Studies (member 7640).  The project and study will run in conjunction with each other to marry traditional genealogical research with genetic testing.

If you are a male Sabey and have had your Y-DNA tested please consider joining the Project as every holder of each variant spelling will form a vital part of the study.  If you are thinking of taking a Y-DNA test (or you are a female who could persuade Mr. Sabey to!) contact us at the Guild of One-Name Studies as we offer a discounted FTDNA testing kit.

Many thanks.

Hi,  I know this is an old post, but I believe Henry Francis Absolom may be my great uncle.  Can you post some more details of the death certificate?  I would be very grateful.

Kind regards, Kyliebun
