Australia Lookups completed / Re: Edith May CROOK (born WYATT) - COMPLETED

Hi Stephanie,
Does the letter cover have any indication of to whom the letter was addressed?  Or, who wrote and sent the letter?  Is there any return address on the letter cover or a postage date?
Cheers,
Jenny

Hello Stephanie,

I am so excited to see your post.  There is a great deal of information I can share with you but some involves living persons, which I cannot place on this site.  Are you able to receive a personal message via RootsChat?  I know it is only available after you have made a certain number of posts to the site.
Let me know and I can send through more information.

Kind regards, Jenny

Hello again Scott,

I think from memory you need three or it could be five posts before you can use PM.  The details are on one of the Home pages of RootsChat.

Hi Scott,

I've just noticed your post.  I'm happy to send you information.  I have far more detail regarding Herbert's wife, Florence Lillian Kennedy (nee Hanson), and her family.  As there is quite a lot of information I would prefer to PM (private message) you but I notice you are a new user and possibly have not yet qualified to use private messages.  Please let me know the best way to contact you - but please do not provide your email address or any private details in the response.

Regards,
Jenster

Hello South Africa chatters,

Based in Australia I am unfamiliar with South Africa resources for researching family history.  I am trying to trace a deceased Australian relative Edith May CROOK (nee WYATT, formerly CRONIN).  It is known that she left Australia for South Africa during the early 1950's.

Edith was born in 1885, which would make her approximately 65 years of age when she left Australia.  It is not known if she was travelling alone or with a companion.  Edith might have travelled under her maiden name WYATT, or her surname from her first marriage CRONIN.

Any assistance with guiding me to the available resources will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks, Jenster.

Thank you JM for the information relating to the commencement date for Australian passports.

Australia / Edith May CROOK - Passport Issue - Passage to South Africa from Australia
« on: Saturday 04 October 14 10:33 BST (UK)  »
It has been a long time since I last posted on RootsChat and the site appears to have changed dramatically.  Apologies if I haven't used the correct forum for this request.

Very recently new information came to light regarding Edith May CROOK (nee WYATT) from a living descendent.  It is now known that she left Australia for South Africa during the early 1950's.  Before I post a request on the South Africa forum I would like to obtain more definitive information to narrow the time frame and hopefully know her destination port in South Africa.

Is there a way of researching the issue of Australian passports in the 1940's and 1950's?

Which resource should I use to research outward journeys from Australia to South Africa?

Edith was born in 1885, which would make her approximately 65 when she left Australia.  Edith might have travelled under her maiden name WYATT, or her surname from her first marriage CRONIN.  I suspect she was not divorced from her first husband when she married Robert James
CROOK.  Or she could have found a new partner and travelled using his surname.

Many thanks, Jenster.

JT2011, what's your source for his place of birth being Stratton?

I'm able to answer (JT2011 and I are related) - On the birth certificate for one of the children for William Edward Wyatt his occupation is listed as "Carpenter"  and his place of birth is listed as "Stratton, Gloucester, England".

BUT, to confuse matters on a birth certificate for another one of his children his occupation is listed as "Carpenter" and his place of birth is listed as "Portsmouth, Hampshire, England".
