The Common Room / Illiterate parish clerk?
« on: Monday 11 March 19 22:41 GMT (UK)  »
I have been working on a parish which appears to have had a parish clerk in the 1750s/60s who could not sign his name. At least, he witnessed quite a few marriages with his mark. I know the C of E was rather in the doldrums in the 18th century, so perhaps he just opened the church and rang the bell? I was going to add "dug the graves" but when he died in 1769 he was ancient! I have seen a list of the parish clerk's duties, and would have thought he needed to be literate.

The Common Room / American library
« on: Friday 01 February 19 12:03 GMT (UK)  »
I have just emailed an archive/library in America and received an automatic reply saying they are closed "due to a lack of appropriations". Is this their way of saying the government is not paying the staff?

This picture is in our local collection. It may be a Womens Institute outing. Could it be from 1947? I had thought earlier, but have found something in the records which points to 1947.

Kent / Dover area WW2
« on: Sunday 30 December 18 16:37 GMT (UK)  »
I am sure someone here will know the answer to this - my searches on-line have been fruitless!
I am trying to find out about the restricted area round Dover and probably much of East Kent in WW2. I have a reference in a local document that there was a checkpoint near the village of Bridge, and my mother told a tale about being stopped by a soldier at Snowdown station, because she was entering a restricted area. (She was a WAAF coming home, and I think she told him where to go!). I would like to know what area was covered by this and what it meant for the locals.

East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Peter White marriage
« on: Saturday 08 December 18 20:12 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to tidy up my Scottish ancestry, and I am hoping someone can find this marriage. Peter White and Margaret Wilson had 3 children baptised 1806/08/11, two in Spott and one in Innerwick, but I can't find the marriage.
I have little experience of Scottish records and have only checked free sites, except FindMyPast.
   Thank you

The Common Room / Poor Law "pass"
« on: Wednesday 28 November 18 21:59 GMT (UK)  »
I have a reference in a churchwardens accounts for 1818 - "Relieved 2 sailors with a pass". Would I be right in assuming this is something to do with the Poor Law and vagrancy? A pass to allow them to reach home?

The Common Room / Carnegie Library
« on: Sunday 28 October 18 20:58 GMT (UK)  »
I have just found a reference to a Carnegie Library being set up in a local village in 1923. Books "may be obtained free every Monday evening". I have not heard of this before, and looking on line only brings up big city libraries. Any thoughts please?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Hard to read will
« on: Thursday 25 October 18 20:09 BST (UK)  »
I downloaded this will from the PRO. It dates from the 1850s, and there are pages of it! Is this a style of writing used for this type of will at that time? I rather doubt that I shall ever be able to plough through it all, which is a pity.

Armed Forces / Royal Engineers? Date please
« on: Monday 03 September 18 22:33 BST (UK)  »
This is a section of a bigger picture with the caption "Royal Engineers outside pub". I would like to know when it was taken. WW1 or earlier?
