Technical Help / Findmypast account problem
« on: Saturday 31 December 16 22:46 GMT (UK)  »
My sub expires in a few days, and I don't want to autorenew. But when I uncheck it and click "update details" it brings up a new red box below my email address saying "Fields do not match", and I can't find any way round it. Suggestions please?

Technical Help / Findmypast problems
« on: Monday 01 August 16 21:39 BST (UK)  »
I seem to be having problems with FindMyPast at the moment, a lot of error messages and now it is refusing to show me census entries I know perfectly well are there. Anyone else?

The Common Room / Marriage by Registrar Certificate
« on: Sunday 22 May 16 16:39 BST (UK)  »
I have recently come across 2 marriages "by superintendent registrar's certificate", rather than banns. I wondered if the first one was because she was marrying under her "official" name (her mother's as she was illegitimate) rather than the name she was brought up with, and did not want to publicize the fact.
There is no similar reason in the second case, but I have slight grounds for thinking the groom might be non-conformist. This was in 1863. Could this be the reason?

The Lighter Side / American censuses
« on: Monday 04 April 16 19:49 BST (UK)  »
I have been following up some family members who went to America in 1839, tracking them through the censuses, and I have been charmed to see that the wives are nearly always entered as "keeping house" rather than the blank left in most English censuses. And keeping house in the mid-west in 1870 would have been a full time job.
I have suddenly developed an interest in the settlement of the West - one of those tangents we all go off on.

Armed Forces / Royal Navy background reading.
« on: Friday 26 February 16 14:54 GMT (UK)  »
My gr. grandfather began his naval career in 1854, going to Australia on the sailing ship Juno. I would like to find out a bit more about life aboard such a ship. Can anyone recommend some background reading, please? Fiction or non-fiction, though it would probably not be my usual type of fiction!

Devon / Met. Police at Devonport?
« on: Friday 05 February 16 17:49 GMT (UK)  »
I have just found someone I was looking for in the police section house at Keyham. There were dozens of police constables listed, all metropolitan police. Would they have been there for training of some sort?
