Kent / Enclosure acts, Kent
« on: Wednesday 13 September 17 20:35 BST (UK)  »
I know rather little about enclosures in Kent (particularly East Kent) and would like to find out some more. All I have been able to find so far on archive websites are a few minor exchanges between large landowners. Any thoughts gratefully received.

Armed Forces / Another coastguard query
« on: Thursday 08 June 17 23:32 BST (UK)  »
I have just found the naval service record of a distant relative, from joining in 1842 until 1869, though his service years only seem to be counted from when he was 20. The last 12 years were with the coastguard. Is there any way of finding out where he served as coastguard? I have never found him in any census after 1841.

Has anyone learned to navigate this catalogue? Because I certainly don't get far with it?

Technical Help / Hotmail Slow
« on: Monday 24 April 17 21:25 BST (UK)  »
I am not sure if this belongs here - it is not really a technical question.

I am finding my hotmail account tediously slow recently, I sit and wait for it to open my inbox, then if I want to send a new message, it takes even longer to open that. I know my computer is a bit elderly and the internet connection not great, but other websites, including this one, open quickly. Any ideas please?

The Common Room / A sad story
« on: Sunday 19 March 17 19:45 GMT (UK)  »
I have been rather exercised in recent days by a story I came across while searching local papers on-line for snippets about my ancestral village. It was about a couple who had been tried for child neglect, and the mother was sentenced to a term of imprisonment with hard labour. (Father was acquitted.) It was quite obvious that she had too many children – 15 in under 20 years, 4 died in infancy – and just could not cope with life. They had been through a similar trial 4 years previously, when again the father was acquitted and the mother sentenced to a month in prison with “such hard labour as she was deemed able to bear.” She had another child about 4 months later.  Things may have improved as the children grew up, but not much, as 3 of the sons died in WW1.
Now, this is not my family, BUT- my upright, respectable great-grandparents were living in the tiny village where the second episode took place. Were they aware of what was going on, or was it ignored because the people in question were a dirty, feckless family, who had only appeared in the village recently? It is a slightly uncomfortable feeling.

Armed Forces / Joining the Royal Navy 1853
« on: Tuesday 31 January 17 21:29 GMT (UK)  »
When my great grandfather volunteered in October 1853, he was a few months off his 18th birthday. His record starts with - "Waterloo for disposal." Was this an actual ship, and would he have undergone some training there? He was assigned to the Juno, which I calculate left for Australia in late April 1854, by which time he was 18 and had signed on for 10 years. Is the timing significant?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Latin translation please

I have an entry in a parish register of a burial, which says;- Thomas Pay ibid: Incumbens nuperrimus obit Jan 27 1651. Does this mean he was the minister of the parish?

Technical Help / Parish records on Ancestry
« on: Tuesday 03 January 17 20:07 GMT (UK)  »
I am thinking of trying out Ancestry instead of Findmypast this year. Their premium sub. claims to have parish records, but do they have the images of the records as Findmypast does, (at least for the East Kent records, which I use a lot?)

Technical Help / Findmypast account problem
« on: Saturday 31 December 16 22:46 GMT (UK)  »
My sub expires in a few days, and I don't want to autorenew. But when I uncheck it and click "update details" it brings up a new red box below my email address saying "Fields do not match", and I can't find any way round it. Suggestions please?
