The Common Room / Re: 1861 census transcription

Thanks both - I will send the correction in. Some years ago I went through the 1851 checking any Pay entries North of Watford, (not that many) and they were almost all incorrect.

I found an entry for Ambrose Pay in an asylum in Yorkshire, and as I am suspicious of any Pays north of London, I did some checking. I am pretty sure he appears in 1851 as Ambrose Gray. Below are the 1851 entry for him and an entry from a previous page for comparison. Is there any point in me sending in an error correction?

Perhaps "expert" was the wrong word - he was a professional researcher. It is all very complicated and I think I will leave it to my descendants!
We did get the records for my father-in-law, which were quite extensive, maybe because he re-joined.

Al - I have just seen your replies to the Prisoner of War post. Are the Glasgow records only for men who stayed on after 1919? According to family my grandfather stayed on in France well into 1919.

Thank you, but experts have checked and there are no records for him apart from his medal card.

I have only checked my grandfather and great uncle. Grandfather was a village carpenter and wheelwright (employed) before the War; he was still a carpenter in 1921, but at one of the Kent coalmines - out of work! They were already on strike. Great uncle was a postman in 1911 and presumably until he joined up. In 1921 he was listed as "civil service pensioner", but I suspect he was already moving into the motor business as I have press cuttings from the early 20s where he is offering motorbikes and cars for sale.
The villagers I have looked at here all seem to have gone back to farm work.

Extra parochial probably means it was a recent informal settlement which was not part of the old parish system. Fen End sounds as if it would fit that. The term crops up in a village near here, where settlement had crept onto the common land area.

Thanks for those links, are they the ICRC records Shaun mentioned? Typically efficient German records - interesting to see him on the list of sick for transfer to Holland. I had worked out from the Canadian records that he was returned home with a batch of unfit men.

Shaun - your post came in while I was writing this. Thanks again.
