Europe / Norwegian Medal
« on: Saturday 13 November 21 15:10 GMT (UK)  »
I have been asked by an elderly half-uncle to find out about one of his relatives (not on side my of the family, so the details are sketchy). I have gleaned what I can by searching various websites eg. CLIP, WW1 ancestors, Norwegian awards….but before I get hopelessly lost any further, I hope someone here will be able to help!

My query concerns one John DAVIES who was drowned at sea between 1911 and 1919.

The story goes he jumped overboard to rescue drowning Norwegian sailors. (It is not clear whether he died at this time, or later.) He was given a medal for bravery, presented by the King of Norway. John’s siblings definitely once owned the citation, but it is now lost.

It’s thought John once served aboard ship called “Sovereign the Seas” (??).

Brief facts about his life: John DAVIES born 1866 Tranmere; baptised 4 March 1866, St Peter’s Liverpool.
1881 Census – Stable Boy aged 15
1891 Census – no trace?  At sea?  Family story says he “ran away to sea”.
3 April 1893 Marriage, St. Peter’s Liverpool.  Abode: Sailors’ Home; Occupation: Mariner.
4 children born in Toxteth Liverpool. Eldest born July 1895, father (baptism entry) = Sailor. Younger children’s baptisms = labourer, warehouse man.
1901 Census – Factory Hand aged 36.
1911 Census - John absent, but wife Margaret definitely married + 4 kids, including Alfred born 1901. John absent any time from 1901 onwards? Did he serve in the War?
30 December 1919 Marriage of daughter shows father as deceased.

Grateful for any help please.

Lancashire / James DAVIES - Death, Liverpool
« on: Wednesday 17 March 21 18:40 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help me find the death of one James DAVIES in Liverpool please?

He was born in c.1805/6 (approx. age 35 on 1841 Census)

1826 married Catherine DERBYSHIRE; three surviving children, Ellen, James & Catherine.
Their youngest child Catherine was b. JQ 1839.

James’s widow Catherine was listed in the 1851 Census. Therefore he died on/before 31 March 1851.

I can find only one registered Death within the correct time-frame, and that is the ‘wrong’ address.

I’d be very grateful for some for help with this long !!! standing problem. Thank you.

The Lighter Side / 'Wrong' name given at baptism?
« on: Tuesday 19 February 19 14:43 GMT (UK)  »
My grandmother was called simply Kate (and registered as such), but she told me that her parents wanted her to be called Kathleen.  However, being unwell, they couldn't get to church for her baptism so 'Old Mrs Davis' took her instead and told the vicar her name was Kate!!  I didn't ask her any more details at the time, but have often wondered who this interfering Mrs Davis was.  In a way the story sounds unlikely, but why would my grandmother make it up?  Her parents obviously thought they had to stick with Kate.

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Chilham Marriage 1808
« on: Thursday 07 February 19 18:16 GMT (UK)  »
Please can someone check an 1808 marriage at St. Mary Chilham for me?

9 January 1808 Thomas EPPS m. Ann SCOTT.  It's in FreeREG, but what I need to know, please, is the condition of the bride.  Was she a spinster, or as I think, a widow?

Thank you,
Melbell

Wales / Owen/John
« on: Friday 07 December 18 17:45 GMT (UK)  »
Is the Christian name Owen likely to be used interchangeably with John in 18th/19th Century Wales?  Or am I barking up the wrong tree here?

Advice gratefully received,

« on: Sunday 21 October 18 16:40 BST (UK)  »
Dear Sussex Rootschatters

I'd welcome your thoughts about the following conundrum please.  Basically, am I justified in thinking that these people are all part of one happy family?

All the following records are taken from the SFHG Sussex Marriage Index and the Data Archive, but I have not looked at the actual registers.

Baptism in Udimore
14 October 1783 Elizabeth BARNET/Elizabeth GUNTER d. of John GUNTER & Hannah BARNET

Burials in Udimore – none relevant

Baptisms in Peasmarsh

1 December 1805 Mahala Neeves BARNETT baseborn child of Sarah BARNETT

Marriages in Peasmarsh

12 June 1813 – Hannah BARNETT m. Richard HOOK, widower

Burials in Peasmarsh
12 December 1829 Hannah BARNETT aged 76 (therefore born 1752/3)
5 December 1831 John BARNETT aged 74 (therefore born 1756/7)
No GUNTER burials

Apart from her baptism there is no other record of a Sarah GUNTER in Peasmarsh.

I'd be grateful to know what you think.
Thanks,

World War One / Help Please to search The London Gazette
« on: Wednesday 10 October 18 15:38 BST (UK)  »
I'm getting nowhere with a search in the London Gazette and wondered whether anyone could help me please.

I'm searching for the citation for Archibald GARRETT a Sergeant in the Royal Garrison Artillery, Regimental No. 75533, who was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, listed in the Peace Gazette, which I understand was dated 3rd June 1919.

I have all the information but I cannot make the search work, whatever criteria I use! The date filters are faulty anyway, but I have managed to find the correct Issue number (I think) - 31390.

I am willing to believe it's just me being useless!  :-[

Thanks for any help or advice anyone can give.
