I wonder why he moved from Schoolhill to Duff Street in his dotage.
Maybe he couldn't manage on his own after Elizabeth died, and moved in with with his nephew or niece.

Putting 'feuar' as an occupation is a bit of a cop-out, because it doesn't really tell how he made his living.

Forfarian, SP is in my plans, time is my only restriction, but most of all I'd like to know about the first marriage of 1821 James Laird.  His 1864 marriage lists him as widow, but I can not find an earlier marriage.  It is possible it was on an overseas voyage, or even at sea, but I doubt it.
Normally, if someone was married more than once, the death certificate gives the names of all spouses (assuming the informant knew this).

Just found an article in The Age of 1 September 1857, which is a report of evidence about the death, or possibly murder, of Mr MacLeod. Among other evidence was a statement by Mr MacLeod, reported by one of the witnesses, that Mr MacLeod had found his wife in bed with an artist by the name of Anderson, who had been lodging in the Southern Cross Hotel, Mr MacLeod's establishment in Beechworth, and who had 'estranged the affections of his wife'. Anderson denied it, as you would expect.

Interestinger and interestinger, to coin a phrase.

I must also plead ignorance of the procedures for finding out about Scottish ancestors which is something I am trying to correct.

Basically everything you need to get started is at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, which is pay-per-view but modestly priced. Scottish civil registration certificates are much more informative than English ones. In particular, a death certificate tells you the full names of the parents of the deceased, including the deceased's mother's maiden surname (assuming of course that the informant knew that).

I see that both James and Elizabeth's deaths were registered in Banff, so if you go to Scotland's People you can instantly download images of the death certificates of Elizabeth in 1869 and James in 1873, which will cost you £3 (£1.50 each).

I was wondering if perhaps this Jean Douglas may have been using 2 surnames at different times i.e. possibly illegitimate herself using Douglas &/or McAdam or both at some time...a passing thought
Yes, quite possible, I suppose.

There's something odd about James Anderson's son-in-law William Richmond too. His family are in the 1901 census in Glasgow and the 1911 census in St Albans in England but he is not, even though his wife says in both that she is married, not widowed, and I can't find him anywhere. Weird.

Ah.

My reason for asking is that it's an 1855 marriage certificate. Like 1855 birth and death certificates, 1855 marriages contain some extra information not included in any other year. The one I am thinking of is that it often gives the couple's dates and places of birth.

Also, all certificates tell you whether or not the parents of the child/couple/deceased were deceased. If the 1855 certificate does not say that John's parents were deceased, there should be death certificates for them, which will confirm the names of their parents.

I take it that you have the marriage certificate of John McEwan and Jane Blackwood, and that this is where you got the names of John's parents from? What else does it say?

Thanks, JM, that is very kind of you.

The information sort of fits. Coming from Belfast (Ireland) my James Anderson is very likely to have been a presbyterian. I know that he was in Belfast on 20 September 1852 and in Melbourne in time to set up a business and advertise it on 17 June 1853, which considerably narrows down his date of arrival. Assuming that his journey took 3 months, he cannot have arrived until late December 1852, and he surely must have arrived by the end of May 1853.
