Census and Resource Discussion / findmypast: public trees
« on: Monday 30 June 14 02:42 BST (UK)  »
Just took advantage of the $1/month offer at findmypast

I can see how to search on 'all records' or BMD, Census, Church etc... but  I cant see how to search on any public trees that may have shared ancestors..
I'm very familiar with ancestry.co.uk.. and it shows be hits from other trees

So how do i do this at FindMyPast ??

Could some kind person visiting the Carlisle Library on Globe Lane please lookup the microfiche article relating to Deer Park Mansion in Etterby,Stanwix
There was an article in the Cumberland News ( details below)

Cumberland news  date 24.08.2007
p36 History and photo of house - Denis Perriam. Photo taken in 1971 shows the house in the background but it did not remain much longer

My father was evacuated there in WW11 but he remembers very little. I am hoping a picture and some details may jog his memory.

Many Thanks :)

Canada Lookup Request / Immigration records for Mark Walter Brown
« on: Saturday 06 April 13 22:11 BST (UK)  »
Mark Walter Brown and possibly his brother emigrated from England sometime around 1912 onwards
He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Port Arthur,Ontario in March 1915 and was shipped back to England and then the Western Front

He left behind a wife and 3 children..  On wars end he returned to them and had a 4th child.

I'm keen to know exactly when he went and if possible, why he went ( without his family )

Could someone look up the immigration records  for me please ?

Many thanks
Mike

Hertfordshire / Emigration to Canada pre WW1 ?
« on: Saturday 06 April 13 04:33 BST (UK)  »
Was it a common thing to emigrate to Canada from Herts in the years immediately prior WW1?
Also, was it common for a family man to emigrate alone, before sending for his family ?

My GGF was born in Redbourn, married a local girl in 1907 and then had 3 children in 1908,11,12

Next thing I find is he enlists in the Canadian army in Ontario in 1915 and comes back to fight on the Western Front !!!    The family were still back in Redbourn all of this time.
(He may have gone to Canada with one of his brothers)
After the war he settles back in Redbourn with his family and has a 4th child and lived the rest of his days in Redbourn.

The possibilities seem to be that
a) The war made him come back before he could send for his family
b) He went to Canada with the intention of sending money back to the family
b) He did a runner, but then reconciled with his family after the war.

So which is the most likely... did many Herts men go to Canada because of lack of local work ?
