Occupation Interests / What is This Optical Instrument ?

Looks like the disk can be rotated slowly by turning the handle.
And that whatever is on the disk can be viewed through the eyepiece ?

What is it ??? The picture was taken somewhere around 1900-1910 I think

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Another question on DNA Grouping

I used that probability table to arrive at 32% and 11% for 5th and 6th cousins

So statistically its still a mathematical puzzle as to how I can have so many cousins in a grouping  ( have 3 groups with over 15 matches in eash, who are all in the range 20-32cm   ) and yet not a single one of them is a match to my cousins.

I will of course pursue other avenues to work out the groups placement.  Thanks

Thanks Craclyn. That helps me better understand the issues

If I have 20 shared matches in a group, all between the range 20cm-32cm, then I now realise each one of them  has a high chance of not matching to one of my cousins ..For simplicity lets assume they are all 5th Cousins. That would mean that Ancestry would give each a 32% chance of matching to my cousin..
With 20 shared matches I should average about 5 or 6 of them matching to my cousin.

If I assume they average to a 6th cousin, thats an 11% chance .. meaning I might expect 2 of 20 to match to a cousin..

The caveat of course is that they may match to my GGP for whom I dont have a DNA-matched first or second cousin.

Would you agree?  Thanks for taking the time to assist me ..

Thank you for your replies..
Ive only included >=20cm  shared matches in the groupings.  ( Ive grouped the top ~100 shared matches)
Of the 18 groups. Three of them relate to my 3 cousins..shared 34 matchs in total
The other 15 groups contain a total of 64 shared matches. These groups dont match to my 3 cousins

My 3 cousins are descendents of 7 out of 8 of my GGP.

So Im just trying to understand why so many of my >=20cm shared matches dont appear to match to one of my 7 GGP's  who passed on their DNA to my 3 cousins

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Another question on DNA Grouping
« on: Monday 05 August 19 05:31 BST (UK)  »
Ive grouped my ancestry DNA shared matches using the colour coding.

I have a 1C DNA match on my mothers side ( so any ancestor of my maternal GP should also match to that 1C)
I also have a 1/2 2C on my fathers side ( shared maternal GGM)   and a 1/2 1C ( shared paternal GF)  DNA match on my fathers side...

I have 18 groups of which 15 do not match to one of my close cousins (1C,1/2 1C,1/2 2C)
Hard to believe they all relate to the 'gap' not covered by those close cousins

Also, out of the hundreds of my DNA matches  only 2 are a shared match to me and my 1/2 1C. Statistically , 1/4 of my DNA matches come from my paternal GF who my 1/2 1C and I share

What am I mis-understanding ?  My understanding is  that
IF I had two 1C's DNA matches  ..one maternal and one paternal , I would expect ALL the DNA groups to match to one of these, wouldnt I ?

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / 1939 Register lookup
« on: Thursday 13 June 19 02:02 BST (UK)  »
Looking for an Elsie Barden  ( or possibly Elsie M Barden) on the 1939  census, living in Leeds.

I'm told by a family member that she was born in 1916-1917 so she will have passed ..
But she may be up 10 years older ...

many thanks in advance

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Re: Isabella and Elizabeth Tinnion (1911-)

A follow up question ..
If a GRO index lookup doesnt show the mothers maiden name, then I know its very very unlikely there will be a fathers name on the BC. But I assume that the actual Birth certificate
should always show the mothers full name? I assume it would?

Im willing to buy a BC, but would be disappointed if the mothers name wasn't present

Thank you both for the research .. Blows a theory I had ..
I have a 1/2 1C1R'ish   DNA match to a lady whos mother was Eliza..   Elizabeth H being a twin would have been a perfect fit . but it was not to be ;)
Onwards and upwards ..

In Familysearch.com I see
Isabella Tinnion       in 2nd Qtr 1911 Castle Ward Vol 10B Page 378
Elizabeth H Tinnion  in 2nd Qtr 1911 Castle Ward Vol 10B Page 356

My understanding is that Isabella was born in May , just after the census ..

If Elizabeths mothers maiden name was Hunter then that means they were not twins
as Isabella's mothers maiden name was Tinnion
