Down / James Gunning
« on: Friday 01 June 18 21:34 BST (UK)  »
There was a James Gunning, born 1913 in Newtownards, who, together with his wife Dorrie, was a missionary in Brazil. His parents were James and Huston Gunning(nee Geddes)they married in !909,I don't know if they had other children.I can't get any futher back as James is such a common name.
I'm curious to know if he was related to me in any way.My ancestors had big families so it's possible that he was related.Of course I could be mistaken.
  Any ideas appreciated,thanks

I don't know if this is of interest. In 1979 my baby son died aged 5 months,we hadn't got round to having him baptized so,as a catholic we couldn't have a church ceremony only a graveside one.At least he was buried in a cemetery and not outside the walls which happened for many years.

I think she has the photo of the 2 girls that's where it all started, looking for the marriage.Could that photo be of Gladys on her wedding day to Austin?

Having exhausted every avenue I can think of,I told my friend what I'd found(with your help). She rejects all of it,she has no idea who Austin c Ayres is,which I can understand. She's adamant that her grandparents were married. This all started because she couldn't find a marriage for her granparents and I said that would help.I contacted registery offices in Canada but non of them had a marriage certificate for Marion and Gordon. It would be interesting to see the birth certificate for Verna Rutledge and the other children they had to see what it puts as parents and their marriage.
I have seen a birth certificate in Scotland where the parents weren't married but they inventented a marriage in England which no one was likely to check.
I can only say that,I'm sure, with all your resourses, you would have found a marriage if there was one.
I found Gordon Elliot Rutledge in the USA in 1920 so he couldn't have married that year!
 Thanks for all your help.

Thanks again for all the help.I think I said before that David Gunning was William's brother,he was also a shoemaker,as were his brothers,James and Thomas.William lived in Conlig, where he rented a large house. When he died he was in the workhouse in Ards, where he'd been for at least a year with dementia.I would think that Mary died before 1896 otherwise she might have cared for him at home? If she died in Conlig,I guess that comes under Ards or is it Bangor?
Someone asked the last record of her being alive, she was alive in 1851 on the census. Her youngest child was born about 1860,I think that was Henry. He went to live in Glasgow.
Where did someone find her marriage date to William? Marriages were recorded from 1845,I have one for another ancestor,so if they were married after that it should be available?
I can't think of anything else that might help in finding Mary's death.

Am still searching for the year of Mary Gunning's death.I've tried several sites but none of them coincide. She must be registered as she definately died after registration became compulsory.

Thank you for replying. Are you saying that the date of death I have for Mary's death,1896 is correct? How do I view it on line?
I contacted Ards Council some years ago and I was given all the lairs owned by Gunnings,I don't know what I did with the print out. I tried to contact them today but it seemed impossible to find anything to do with the cemetery.I logged onto Billion Graves but didn't have any luck there. Is there nowhere else that has records for Movilla. If William and his wife are in a paupers grave there should still be a record of the burial
