Ireland / A Terrible Beauty - Easter 1916
« on: Sunday 30 June 13 13:50 BST (UK)  »
This past week, I went to see the new film, A Terrible Beauty,  written and directed by Keith Farrell about the Easter rising. It is very interesting and I would recommend it if you get the chance to see it.
It will be shown on TG4 in Ireland and hopefully at some film festivals but not sure about any tv or general release in UK.

Technical Help / Cannot type in e mail message box
« on: Wednesday 01 February 12 16:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I am in a group where the leader sends group emails to us - that is fine.

However when she wants to send me a personal email she cannot type a message in the message box.It just does not happen.
It is just my address that this happens to- everyone else is fine. I think she also said that if she does that, she then cannot send an email to anyone else without closing down and reopening her email facility. It seems that it is my address which causes the problem.

Has anyone got an explanation that I can pass on please?

thanks

Technical Help / Acer laptop/netbook chargers
« on: Wednesday 07 December 11 12:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone  :)

I use an Acer Aspire One small netbook and my charger/lead must have a faulty connection because it has begun to work intermittently.
I have just charged the netbook using the charger from a full size Acer laptop. This adapter is bigger than the one for the AspireOne.
My question is  - will this make any difference or harm my little netbook?

thanks

World War Two / 55 Anti Tank Regiment Holland
« on: Monday 21 June 10 20:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I wonder if someone could just interpret the letters below (in bold). We understand the others. In some letters we have, our relative (a Gunner)  gives his number, then:
RHQ (SY) 55 Anti Tank Regt R A
BLA
and in another has T C V       P ? L   (possible L for ?)

He would have enlisted in Lancashire but when I search for this regiment it says 'Loyal Suffolk Hussars'. I assume it was this previously and geographically doesn't make any difference for enlistment.

He writes of Bochum being 'our centre' for food distribution to Displaced Persons Camps.
We also believe he was D Day plus 1.

Thanks very much

Technical Help / Digital Photo card still keeps photos -completed with thanks
« on: Monday 29 March 10 19:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I am hoping that some well informed person can explain something to me. It is not a worry but can be irritating. I have just uploaded 27 photos from my photocard on to my laptop- using the card slot but there was also an extra 100+ photos from last November!
These were deleted at the time, and there have been many photos taken, uploaded and deleted since then.
It has happened before- sometimes just one or two snaps come from nowhere.
I know that there is a facility to recover photos as I have had this done previously when another computer did something to a card. However, at the moment, I am 'recovering' photos I don't need  ::)
I have tried to search for an explanation but I can only see sites which help to recover rather than delete.

Thanks for reading and I hope someone can advise on this mystery. :)

Technical Help / Help re Hotmail account not functioning
« on: Sunday 07 March 10 21:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
for the last few hours, I have been having  trouble with hotmail.
I get this message:
There was a problem with the Windows Live Hotmail service (a temporary network connectivity issue that has nothing to do with your computer). Please try again.
I am notified re new emails but can't open them.
I can't open or delete any exisiting messages and although the page opens for a New message, I am unable to write a message.
I am very impatient but hope that as the message states, it will be resolved.
I am just wondering if anyone is experiencing similar problems or has some knowledge of this.
I have used hotmail for years and have had few difficulties.
thanks

Technical Help / Netgear Security Key lost
« on: Saturday 12 December 09 20:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I have bought myself a little netbook. We have a cable modem and Netgear wireless router already working with existing computers.
To access the internet on my new purchase, I have to enter the Netgear Security key - and we have no idea what it is. I can't find it in the paper work we have.
I have read on internet forums that I can use a paper clip/biro on back of the router and reset but I am worried that if I did anything, I would mess up the connections for my daughter's laptop and our desktop.
Is that the only way? Would netgear be able to help if I phone them on Monday?
thanks for any advice

The Common Room / First name - Richmael... why Bury area?
« on: Saturday 17 October 09 11:31 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I have found a possible female family member:
Richmael Rothwell b Birtle, Bury c 1812 (submission on FS);
25 yrs in 1841.

Looking up the name - almost every Richmael/Richmal was born Bury area  including Richmal Crompton, author of 'Just William' stories.

I have come across certain names being very popular in certain places e.g. Anastasia in Co Wexford and Isabella in the North East come to mind, but this is such a specific area and I wondered if anyone has any thoughts as to why?

I can't find any information re its origins either  ???

thanks for reading this - it won't be the end of the world if I never find out but it has caught my interest.  ;)
