Gloucestershire / Re: Who is John Embry?
« on: Wednesday 21 May 14 22:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi

These baptisms may help? Look at John's occupation on each one.

William Embry bapt 29 Nov 1818 Monmouth son of John - labourer - & Maria
Richard Embrey bapt 23 July 1823 Monmouth son of John (Bargeman) and Maria
Hannah Maria Embery bp 22 Jun 1825 Monmouth daughter of John (waterman) and Maria

I think the following parents are the same couple? She married as Marianne.

John Embery bp 20 Sep 1827, Monmouth, son of John (labourer) & Mary Ann
Thomas Embry bp 4 Dec 1829, Monmouth, son of John (bargeman) & Maria
Emily Embry bp 3 Mar 1832, Monmouth, daughter of John (waterman) & Maria
Emma Embry bp 17 Apr 1835, Monmouth, daughter of John (waterman) & Maria

Sarah Embrey bp 23 Mar 1838 Monmouth, daughter of John (waterman) & Maria

John Embry bachelor otp married Marianne Price spinster otp 3 Apr 1815 at Monmouth

This looks like the 1872 death quoted, but age on burial record is 80?

So it does look as though he worked as a labourer when he had no goods to transport on the barge. Maybe!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Cause of Death?
« on: Tuesday 20 May 14 19:47 BST (UK)  »
You have inadvertently helped me too!

My GG Grandmother died in 1890 at the age of 38, and this was written on her Death Cert. I even took the Cert. round to my local surgery to see if the doctors there could decipher it for me! They had never heard of it and said that, in those days, doctors could write pretty much anything they liked. These days things have to be much more precise and there are even some words they are not allowed to use.

So thanks for asking the question!

Just going backwards for a minute. I don't know what happened to Andrew's parents, but he appears to be with brothers William & Thomas in 1841:

Just to confuse matters, the Glos BMD Index shows son Andrew Henry born 1872 with mother's maiden name as BRICE! I can't find a baptism for Andrew jnr on the Forest of Dean Family History site.

This is from the Gloucestershire BMD Indexes. It does show mother's maiden name as GRICE.

???

There is a Daniel Brittain bc 1828 living in St Michael, Bristol in 1871. He is a Sweep.

With him is wife Ann and several children. No Rose listed, but there is a gap in the children's ages where she would fit in!

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / Re: Lewis Baptisms (Mardy)

Hi Carole

Yes I have done that, but more children were born well after 1911. The problem is there were a LOT of Lewis/Davies children registered in the area at the time. A bit of a needle in a haystack really!

Thanks for your suggestions.

Kind Regards
Chris
