Warwickshire / Re: Hughes - Still can't locate parents!

Have you considered that Hughes may also have been a false / former name?

There is a Priscilla Hughes in the 1841 census, aged 20 and with an apparent husband Charles and daughter Catherine.

The daughter was baptised as Catherine Priscilla Hughes on 19 Jan 1841, with her DoB given as 26 Jul 1840.

I can't find a marriage between Charles and Priscilla, nor can I find a birth for Catherine / Catherine Priscilla Hughes (there is one in 1840 with the mmn Firkin/Firkins, but she belongs to another family).

The Catholic Parish Registers at the National Library of Ireland has the following baptism in the Parish of Doneraile in the diocese of Cloyne, Cork:

12 Sep 1816 John son of William Thornhill and Mary (nee Roache or Roche), Ballyandrew (I think!).

Siblings appear to be Honora 1820 and Mary 1823, both baptised at Doneraile, and then William 1828 at St Finbar, Cork

Even having that is fantastic.  Tks.
3months hard labour I should imagine.   I was expecting a much more harsh sentence.
Is that the extent of the information from Fold3; or would there be any more in the regimental records?

It doesn't specify hard labour whereas some others do, so it would seem not.

That is the only information on Fold3.   Generally speaking, for the period in question you will only find service records for men who were discharged to pension, either through illness/injury or time served.

WO 86/6 is the Courts Martial Register and is on Fold3, although unfortunately it doesn't give much information.

Jas Newton, 96th Regiment. Tried at Auckland 27 Nov 1851 for Desertion and sentenced to 3-months.

You've given us several 'reported' facts but nothing to tell us where this information comes from.  Can you expand please.

According to Familysearch there was a marriage 16 Jul 1814 at Killinchy, County Down between Edward Johnston and Margaret Moore

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGN3-XQM

Familysearch also has two baptisms at Killinchy for Thomas Johnston s/o Edward, one on 16 Feb 1818 and one on 24 May 1818.  Without seeing the original register I don't know whey its recorded twice, but the first could perhaps be a private baptism if he wasn't expected to survive, and the second being when he was accepted into the church.

According to the Familysearch catalog, it was the Killinchy Presbyterian Church

The Common Room / Re: My beloved Nana passed away today!

Sincere condolences for your loss.

My 90-year-old father passed away on 20th December last year - the day after my son's birthday - so I know how especially painful it can be to lose someone you love at this time of year.

Christmas Day will doubtless be difficult, but try if you can to raise a glass of the sparking stuff and smile at the wonderful memories she's left you xx

I don't think this has been posted already - apologies if it has, but better to have it twice than not at all.

The Government is consulting on its proposal to digitise all UK wills from 1858 onward and then destroy the originals after 25 years, with the exception of certain famous people.  Consultation closes 23 Feb 2024.

I've had it bookmarked for a few years now, and yes, it's really free.

I haven't had much success finding anything of use, but that's more to do with geography than anything lacking on the site.
