Nice that is looks like 'temptress', but I think I agree with Annie, 'seamstress'.

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1891, 1901 census lookup please

Thank you so much Cathy and Suz, that certainly looks like her. I think the 1901 census looks like a pretty good match.

Although it now poses another avenue for me to persue as I don't have any Brownshill's yet! The only unaccounted Ann E that could be an aunt for Lilian was born in 1850 at Warborough, so she doesn't look quite right. I wonder if "Wallington" is meant to be "Wallingford"? Lilian's grandmother was from Wallingford so I might continue looking into her line a bit more.

Thanks again, one mystery solved and I love having another one to contemplate!

I'm trying to find Lilian Mary FREEMAN who was born in Ickford in 1881. In the 1891 and 1901 census she is not with her parents Harry and Mary Jane. She marries in December 1901 in Islington (her address is Trinity Place) and I have her details after this, but would appreciate it very much if someone could help find her in those missing years.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Pat1652 and welcome to rootschat,

There is this article (and quite a few others) on Trove about him living in Hampshire in 1947 as a racehorse trainer

Lots of nice royal portraits by Robert Milne (1865-1952) in the National Portrait Gallery.

There is quite a bit of info about Gillman and Co available, as they're still operating today (as Gillman and Soame).

I gather the use of "Gillman and Co" first appears around 1880, so as for dating your photo I'm afraid I'm not much help other than it's later than 1880.  :)

Thanks anneb, I might try to follow these up ... see where they lead, although as you say, doesn't look too promising.

thanks again for your efforts.  :)

Looking at some of Thomas Sykes's children's families I came across the name Levett COLLIN (in various spellings) - Thomas' son William's son was named Levett Collin SYKES and appears as 'nephew' in the 1881 Wicham census with Levett COLLIN who I traced through the various census as being born around 1806 at Mepal. There is a Levett COLLIN baptised in 1806 at Stretham to Margaret and John MARTIN (not sure why he doesn't have the surname of the father?), and another Levett COLLINS family at Cottenham baptising children from 1802 - 1820, although none of the children are named Levett that I can see.

Is the similarity of the name COLLIN and CATTON worth persuing I wonder? I can't seem to make the connection with the SYKES family.
