The Common Room / Would like some help with Scottish accent please
« on: Thursday 12 July 18 09:25 BST (UK)  »
I'm preparing a presentation for a family reunion.

The opening slide/title is "What's a nice girl from Eastcheap doing in a draughty Scottish castle"

I'd be grateful for any suggestions to make it sound as if it was being said by someone from Scotland.

Many thanks indeed.

Scotland / Visiting ScotlandsPeople Centre in Edinburgh? And NRS.
« on: Monday 25 June 18 09:59 BST (UK)  »
Woo hoo!  I'm going to Scotland in August for a family reunion!!

From the ScotlandsPeople website it looks like I can just use my current registration to book a place.  Is it really 25p per page to save to my account, or have I misunderstood?

There's also a few records on the NRS index that I'd like to see, but I'm wondering about getting a Reader's ticket.  Would there be any problem with having a foreign address?

Have just come across a DNA match with a Scottish ancestor with this surname.

The Common Room / Depths of burials in a shared plot - how far apart?
« on: Tuesday 15 May 18 22:35 BST (UK)  »
I'm going through the records of a Scottish graveyard in the early 1800s and hoping that I might find some clues about some of my ancestors.  I'm also checking monumental inscriptions that are available.  My family didn't have any headstones but the other people with the same surname who did have headstones have helped to rule out certain burials.

Two young sisters of my ancestor were buried there in the 1820s - one at the head and the other at the foot, at 7 feet in the north plot which belongs to a man with the same surname as their mother.
I think the plot was purchased by their uncle.

A few months before the first sister died the mother of a man with the same name as their uncle, was buried in this man's south grave at 7 feet.  Five years later the father of a man with the same name as their uncle was buried 6 foot deep in the south grave of his son's property.

From the vertical distance between these burials (6ft and 7ft) I'm not sure this is the same plot and family.  If anyone has knowledge of the practical aspects of interment I'd appreciate their opinion.

Technical Help / Anyone having trouble signing into FindMyPast?
« on: Sunday 08 April 18 19:28 BST (UK)  »
This is the message I'm getting this morning and it was the same last night.  Tried the UK and AU sites.

Cannot POST /sign-in

A few days ago I could sign-in but searches would only work in newspapers.  Last time things "worked" was at Easter, but not all that well.   It's been problematic on the old iPad ever since they "updated" the search format a few months ago.

My sub runs out in a few days.  It's not much use to me at the moment anyway.

The Common Room / Five days from death to burial in the late 1700s in Scotland
« on: Friday 06 April 18 07:09 BST (UK)  »
I'm wondering whether such a gap between death and burial occurred very often back then, and I'm wondering about the practical issues, even thought it was January (in Fife).  Was it possible to embalm then?

The church records clearly state the date of death and date of burial.

London and Middlesex / Highgate cemetery. Not much change out of £10 at DeceasedOnline.
« on: Saturday 17 February 18 06:11 GMT (UK)  »
£5 for a map of where just ONE grave is?  If they're going to charge EVERY STEP OF THE WAY then I think it should be obvious from the burial register scan or Grave details whether it's the east or west cemetery, and they should split the records accordingly.

Fortunately there's six family members in the one plot.  I don't think I'd fork out £5 each.

https://www.livingdna.com/en-nz/press-releases/303/scotland-s-genetic-history-be-unlocked-new-national-dna-project

"16th November 2017 - Somerset, UK
Local Scots encouraged to share their past roots with joint research project from Living DNA and the University of Strathclyde.
Researchers from Living DNA, Europe’s leading consumer genetics company, have launched a nationwide appeal to collect DNA samples from 3,000 Scottish people whose grandparents were born before 1935 and all lived within 50 miles (80km) of each other.

The project is now calling for qualifying participants from the following 20 regions of Scotland: Aberdeenshire, Angus and Dundee, Perth and Kinross, Fife and Clackmannanshire, Falkirk and Lothians, Scottish Borders, Dumfries and Galloway, Ayrshire and Renfrewshire, Glasgow City, Dunbartonshire and Lanarkshire, Stirling, Argyll, Bute & Isle of Arran, Western Isles Council, Moray, Orkney Islands, Shetland Islands, Skye, Caithness, Sutherland and Ross Inverness.

The more diverse regions are of particular interest, with the team mostly keen to explore areas where there is evidence of settlers speaking Norse, Gaelic and Scots, such as The County of Caithness in Northern Scotland which is known to have been home to some very early inhabitants....."

"Those who qualify to take part in the project will receive a significant discount and over time will be able to see a highly-detailed view of their Scottish ancestry"

To find out more information and join the project, interested participants should visit www.livingdna.com/one-family/research.
